It doesn't make you a better mother if your child is potty trained early, and it certainly has no reflection on your childs future development.

eidsvold · 25/05/2007 09:34

it will simply be toilet timing - you will get into a routine of putting her on the toilet and having some success but a lot of mess - can she dress herself in that she can take her pants/clothing up and down???

In my reading and working with dd1 and her OT children rarely have the neurological pathways appropriate for true toilet training until they are around 3. By pathways - I mean getting the message that their bladder/bowel needs emptying and then being able to process what needs to happen next. Otherwise it is more the parent who is trained.

JodieG1 · 25/05/2007 09:37

My ds1 has just got potty training and he's 3.7, it took him a few days but he wasn't ready until then. It will be a while before we do night time too. 11 months seems insanely young.

WelshBoris · 25/05/2007 09:40

How is the little on Eidsvold?

WelshBoris · 25/05/2007 09:40

Little one

kreamkrackers · 25/05/2007 09:42

my dd is 3. she has sn. she can't walk or take clothes on/off. i tried to potty train her though a couple of months ago. it was more luck then anything with putting her on at the right time. i tried to praise her for what she'd done and she looked at me blankly. i know she didn't understand. she's got the abilities of a 12-18 month old.

i'd personally wait if i was you til at least 15 months and that would only be if you feel she's advanced for her age. there's no rush to potty train. it's hard enough being a parent don't feel under pressure to do things as it could add unneccessary stress.

shazzaronnie · 25/05/2007 09:46

thanks for all the treads a few family members and friends have said i should start but i think its to early, they think as i'm having another 1 in three weeks that if my dd was out of nappys would help me but i don't think she's ready yet?

kreamkrackers my dd1 is almost 5 with sn and just now is showing signs of being ready for toilet training. We are starting with toilet timing and then progressing to toilet training. However my dd2 is coming up 3 and I think she will get the hang of toileting very quickly.

welsh boris little one is doing fab - she really is a very settled baby which helps with our mad family life.

eidsvold · 25/05/2007 09:49

shazza at this stage I have 3 in nappies. Was going to try over last summer with dd1 ( dec - mar) but as I was heavily pregnant and then dd3 arriving felt dd1 had enough on her plate as well as me without trying to madly toilet train in amongst it all.

I would wait until life with the new babe settles down - lot of pressure on you to take your little one to the toilet etc as well as feed and tend to a newborn - you do not need that kind of stress. Let life settle down and if your little one is showing signs of wanting to be toiletted than go with it - if not - give yourself a break!!

shazzaronnie · 25/05/2007 09:56

thanks thats sounds more like it so no need to worry yet then

OP posts:
eidsvold · 25/05/2007 09:58

no way - be kind to yourself - imagine being sleep deprived a newborn desperate for a feed and a 12month old telling you they need the toilet NOW!!!! cause they haven't got the waiting and taking themselves to toilet yet!! no way - truly give yourself a break.

Twiglett · 25/05/2007 10:12

don't understand the point in potty training a child who is unable to take off and put on her own clothes

you could look up 'elimination training' if you wanted .. but quite honestly can't help feeling those who practice it are a little bit 'out there' .. but all power to their defecation

between 2 and 3 .. probably closer to 2 and a half is the time to start (when they're ready) .. it'll take a few days to a week

if you do it now you'll be ruled by potty timing and have years of accidents to deal with

Twiglett · 25/05/2007 10:13

some countries they just wait till the kids do it themselves and they're all out of them by around 5 (switzerland for one I believe)

FrannyandZooey · 25/05/2007 12:25

Waiting till 3 worked superbly for me

most of my friends with girls waited till almost 3 and had great results also

Blandmum · 25/05/2007 12:28

a mate of mine was determined that her dd would be 'done' before 2, so she started too early at the 18 month mark. After months and months of accidents, stess and mess her dd was 'done' at 2.5, the same age as mine. I waited till dd was 2.5 and it took 2 weeks. Ds was raround 3 and took a week.

my mum had all four of us potty-trained by 1, but in a way i think what she was doiing was more akin to a thing called Elimination Communication. it's really interesting, actually, not to mention ecologically sound. dd is 17 months and occaasionally asks for her potty and does a wee or poo so i think she must have some control.

Sakura · 25/05/2007 15:42

Welshboris, I never imagined that someone would think I was a better mother because my child is potty trained early . I want to give it a go, partly out of curiosity (shes my first), partly for environmental reasons (saving on nappies), partly for trying to empower my child more in the sense of if she can tell me when she need to poo, she wont have to do it in a nappy, partly because of the problems Ive read that older children go through, and because Id like DD trained before I had another baby, and also because I`m at home a lot as a SAHM I think why not? Its going to be a stress whenever I try it, and theres nothing much going on in my life now, so why not have a stab now and see how it goes.

fillyjonk · 25/05/2007 17:29

(am i the only one who didn't actually train my kid?

ds sorted himself out at around 2.4, though I was quite happy to wait til MUCH later, say 4ish

dd is doing the same. She is 22 months but-might take a while. Who cares? Theres a lifetime of weeing accurately in a toilet pan ahead of them)

belgo · 25/05/2007 17:32

Filly - I also didn't actually potty train my dc. DD1 was dry at 23 months after one day of accidents. DD2 is also dry, if anything, dd1 potty trained her sister!

In this respect, I am lucky.

katelyle · 25/05/2007 17:35

But Sakura, the point it, if you wait til they are really ready it's not a stress. They say something like "I think I'd like to wear pants instead of nappies" You say "OK then, remember to tell me if you need to go to the loo" they say "OK" and that's it - job done. Oh and believe me, most toddlers don't need empowering!

fillyjonk · 25/05/2007 17:43

oh yes

pmsl in nicest possible way at idea that todders need empowering

HonoriaGlossop · 25/05/2007 18:16

totally agree with you katelyle. That was exactly how my ds potty 'training' happened. We avoided potties altogether as well thank god as he went straight to the loo. there was no training involved, as he was READY.

mumeeee · 25/05/2007 18:18

11 Months is to young. I work in a nursery and we have a few children potty training but they are all aged between 2 and 3.

WelshBoris · 25/05/2007 19:31

Yes if your 11 month old can wee on a potty then of course she will feel empowered.

Goes without saying
