Unwanted behaviour at mealtimes - Help!

My DS is 24 months old.

He has always been a great eater, he's not fussy at all. Even at nursery they always comment on what a great eater he is.

Unfortunately, over the past couple of weeks I've noticed he has started to ask for help to feed himself and now he flat out refuses to pick up his spoon/fork. Just shouts help until me or DH give in. As far as I know, he is feeding himself fine at nursery.

Also, since yesterday I've noticed he's been holding food in his mouth. Won't spit it out or swallow it. He has been holding it there for over 20 minutes sometimes, until he forgets, speaks, and spits it out all over himself.

I'm trying to ignore it but between this and him refusing to feed himself, meal times are becoming stressful.

I'll add that he's well, isn't showing any signs of teething.

Has anyone else been through this?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated
