23month old not talking.

My little boy ages 23 months old hardly speaks any 'real' words. "Dad" and "dada" and "more" are the only ones that I have been able to pick out. At nursery they have been monitoring his speech and they have said he says words there but once he has said them he won't say them again. I have booked in to see the health visitor's tomorrow to see what they say. He doesn't have a problem with his hearing at all. One of my family members mentioned ASD and it's made me panic. I feel like a complete failure thinking it's something I haven't done or haven't done. Please tell me I'm worrying over nothing and that his speech will come.

I had one who didn’t say a bloody word, or anything that sounded like a word, until just after his 2nd birthday.
Within a month he was talking in five word sentences. Now he’s 3.5 and according to his nursery is considered ahead of his peers for speech, language and climbing stuff .
I was so worried.
It’s great you’re talking to your health visitor, they can be great.

My son is 2 today and only says about 6 words, he's delayed in other areas too so seen health visitor and specialist she said she's not concerned about his speech for his age and it'll come, but he has been referred to speech and language so they may do that. Sure he will be fine though

Delayed speech alone isn't a sign of autism, but if other aspects of his development concern you it might be worth taking the M-Chat test on his behalf - if you haven't already.

What is his comprehension like? Does he try to communicate without words? When my son was speech-delayed, our doctor told me that she wasn't overly concerned about him precisely because his understanding was so good and that he did communicate - even if it was all body-language and grunts!

My son also did the use a word once or twice and then not say it again thing, which did worry me - having read about losing language being a possible aspect of autism.

He will be three at the end of July, and I have no concerns about him at all now. His vocabulary is enormous and the only time he stops chattering is when he's asleep.

Unless there are other areas of concern, it is very probable that speech will come in time. Late-talkers are not uncommon, and plenty of them have no additional needs. Hopefully one day in the not-too-distant future you'll be wondering why you ever wanted a child which talks

My ds also failed the above m-chat test and is currently on his pre-schools SEN register, but, he’s just a late developer.
Some children just are a bit slow on the uptake - he’s as bright a pin though.
Still doesn’t point, shake his head, like soft toys and various other stuff that’s supposed to be ASD indicators.
I am convinced by 5 there will be no difference between him and his peers, and as I said he is already ahead in some areas.
