Is Anbesol safe?

My DS (3 months) has just cut his first tooth. The pharmacist recommended Anbesol liquid applied every three hours. However when I've googled it there are warnings published in 2011 (American, from the FDA) saying that drugs such as Anbesol that contain benzocaine aren't safe for babies under age 2?

I'm now terrified because I put Anbesol on DS's gums and he stopped screaming and went straight to sleep.

He’ll be fine, calm down and enjoy the peace!

The UK version of Anbesol doesn't contain benzocaine anyway, only lidocaine.
