1 week off 8 months and STILL not sitting, worrying or just a bit slow?

DS2 is otherwise very happy and sociable little chap. He can roll both ways and has begun trying to push up on his front and bring knees up (but not very successfully).

The main thing that seems to be stopping him is some sort of reflex meaning that he arches back a lot, though sometimes it does just seem to be poor bablance. He was slow to lose his tongue thrust reflex too making weaning difficult - that only disappeared last week.

I wasn't worrying but have been really thinking about it recently rather than just assuming he'll catch up. Has anyone else got experience of this sort of thing? My HV is coming next week for a check but I just want to be reassured right now if you all think it's normal

if it is any reassurance my DS is nearly one and has never rolled but sat up from 7 months. He can only crawl backwards but can pull himself up and weightbear - i think what i am trying to say is that not every babby hits every milestone when they are "meant" to - is his general health and developent good? If so, i would of course mention your concerns but not worry too much

liquidclocks · 17/05/2007 14:30

DS1 was the same taylormama - sat but not interested in rolling. I suppose I'm concerned because it seems like something involuntary (relfex?) in his movements that's stopping him.

I hate this! never worried about DS1 in the same way but I supposer now I see other children and what they're up to. My LO seems left behind.

Dd1 did'nt sit till she was 10-11 months, dd2 sat at 7 months, i would'nt worry

CantSleepWontSleep · 17/05/2007 14:37

Oh do try not to worry lc. I have a friend whose ds2 didn't start sitting until he was about 10 or 11 months, and I'm not sure that he's started crawling yet (now about 14 months), but seems perfectly healthy. It's just his way.

It will happen in it's own time - nothing you can do to force it.

liquidclocks · 17/05/2007 14:37

Was anyone concerned about your DD1 Marne? Good to know that it's not just DS2.

what makes him arch his back? As your HV is coming anyway it would be worth mentioning (the not sitting and the arching). When the "average" age for sitting? I don't think 8 months is that far outside it is it?

PizPizPiz · 17/05/2007 14:48

My dd was not sitting at 8m. She crawled at 12m, walked at 14. I wouldn't worry, and would take what the hv tells you with a pinch of salt.

canarygirl · 17/05/2007 15:06

my dd2 is exactly the same - she is just over 8 months and won't sit as she too arches her back and cries. She isn't rolling either and I too am worried as dd1 sat and rolled all over the place, and its hard not to compare. Otherwise she seems happy and is interested in her surroundings and is feeding better these last two days - she wasn't really interested in solids much until now. I saw the HV a couple of days ago and she told me to put her on her front but she hates it so I'm not doing it. She won't push herself up and just flounders and gets cross.

As you ds can roll and push up I would say he's doing better than my dd! I know how hard it is not to worry but from my other thread and your replies here it seems we've not too much to worry about. I would love to hear what the HV says to you though. Not much help I know but at least you know you are not alone.

DontCallMeBaby · 17/05/2007 15:12

The day after DD turned 8 months I went round to a friend's house and said 'look, she'll sit for a second, and then just fall over, I'm getting a bit worried', and plonked her on the floor. She sat there for FIFTEEN MINUTES, the minx!

(Good) HVs tend to get concerned about seriously late milestones - eg subsequently when DD was 13 months and not crawling or weightbearing I was just asked 'does she sit unaided?'

liquidclocks · 17/05/2007 15:16

Thanks canarygirl, I'll post back with what she says next week. DS1 hated his front too btw and it was only after he'd learned to crawl he'd go on his front to play They're all different!

Mine is 8 months next week. Shes still exclusively breastfed and doesnt seem to want to "do" food. I dont tell anyone because it seems far too late, but then I think "by whos schedule"? Shes just started to sit up, but if I put her on her stomach, she just flails about so I donT see any crawling in sight for a while.

wrinklytum · 18/05/2007 21:14

I would not worry,I know this is easy to say.I think I replied to Canary girls' thread.

FWIW my first child followed all the developmental milestones almost "by the book".Sadly the book does not seem to take account of individuality,so when no 2 came along and was much slower than her brother I was in a bit of a tizz!

I hope it will reassure you to know that dd,now 17 months, did not gain her sitting balance until 9 months, did not roll until a year and did not start to move anywhere until 15 months. She is now an adept bum shuffler and shuffles rapidly after her brother tormenting him hugely by grabbing his ears and poking him in the eye

I am still waiting for her to walk but think she will do it in her own sweet time, she is just laid back.

I am sure your little one will be fine but ifyou are really concerned then maybe see your health visitor/GP.

HTH.

totaleclipse · 18/05/2007 21:20

My dt2 never sat unaided until she was 14 months, she is 3 years now and perfectly fine.

macmama73 · 18/05/2007 21:25

Hi,

my DD stood up at 8mth but she still wasn't sitting. When she let go of whatever she was holding onto she went down like a tree falling over. TIIIIIIIIMMBEEEEEEEERR!!

She didn't sit properly until she was over a year, and she walked before she could crawl.

Every child is different so I wouldn't worry.

hana · 18/05/2007 21:28

no, you don't have to worry, babies are all different
I have an 8 month old who isn't sitting unsupported either
I'm not worried , she'll get it.

soph28 · 18/05/2007 21:36

my ds did everything early/on time but dd was over 8 months before she sat. She is now 10 months and can sit but still loses her balance every no and then (in the bath last night!) has never rolled and hates being on her tummy.
Incidentally she didn't start eating until well over 8 months either but now she loves her food.
She has only just started clapping. DS could do about 10 animal sounds by 12mths! Am not worried, just enjoying the fact that I can put her anywhere and she won't move and i can change her nappy without her rolling away! They are all different!

used2bthin · 18/05/2007 21:59

DD is slightly older and not sitting or crawling yet so this post is actually reassuring for me! And I had her weighed today and HV asked if she was sitting cos she was kind of leaning everywhere. I said no and looked v panicked and she said no no she's on track development wise so don't worry but could encourage sitting by propping up with cushions and giving her practise. So far she just throws herself forward to do more rolling tho! Maybe they just enjoy that too much!
