swimming nappy, does baby have to have a nappy under it? silly q but I just don't have a clue?

about to go on hols. ordered a john lewis swim nappy for DS (7 months). It looks like a pair of glorified plastic pants. now i'm assuming you don't put a regular nappy underneath, so do you just put the swim nappy on their bum and then wash it in the machine? it's one of those first time mum questions, I'm afraid...

a related q is can you put a baby in a hotel swimming pool, or would it be too cold? also going to the sea (turkey) and would like to go in the sea with him, but don't want him to get cold, is it better just to paddle?

I use those nappies (DS - 10months) and I don't put anything on underneath. I would probably use a swimsuit aswell for the sea - the hotel pool will probably be fine.

get a wetsuit type swimming costume is you're woried about the temperature.

don't know the JL swim nappy - but normally just put on swim nappy & it contains the poo.

see how he feels in the pool - lo's can get cold really quickly so watch out for this.

The purpose of a reusable swim nappy is to hold a poo. Infant swimming pools are chlorinated sufficiently to cope with regular wee and the sea will dilute any wee.

The nappy will have a liner in it that is like a washable nappy. You don't need another nappy underneath. It will hold wee but if you lo does a poo then you should take him out and change him straight away.

You can get disposable huggies ones in case your one is in the wash. or get two.

I'd just paddle unless it feels warm enough to you. Have towels ready. Those Hooded ones are good.
The pool should be ok in short bursts.

just a quick addition about pool temp - we were caught out the first time we went abroad by how quickly our dd got cold in the pool. Went from loving it and warm enough to hating it and freezing cold in a matter of seconds (and lips went blue in temp of around 30 degrees!) - so my advice is to have towel and/or one of those towelling dress/dressing gown jobbies to hand. Have a great time

Even the disposable Huggies swim nappies are washable - you can use them several times if they're not soiled. I used to wash them in the machine with our towels etc after swimming and they lasted about 6 weeks!!

Wow Harrisey, did not know that! I guess they don't have any magical gel powers then if they don't swell up and explode.

It is entirely possible for a swim-nappied toddler to wee all over the changing room floor in an inconvenient and/or embarassing manner.

That is how I discovered that swim nappies do not prevent wee from escaping. We were standing by the lockers at the time and DD1 was about 18 months, standing up and weeing with great enthusiasm

gemmitygem - Where in Turkey are you going and when? South coast (Antalya etc) would be pretty warm by now, and even west coast places like Cesme with very shallow sea should be quite warm.

I used Huggies swim nappies for DD last year and was horrified to see that they were not holding her pee in at all.

going to Princes Islands off Istanbul (no cars, just grannies, geraniums and wooded beaches), great now we have a baby! very quiet.. think sea wouldn't be as warm as Antalya.. oh well, will try the john lewis swim nappy and hope for best.. thanks!

I've been to those, but honestly don't remember the water temperature. We were on a boat anyway, so I haven't had a beach experience. I am not sure if there are any beaches, in fact.
