Food “tantrum”?

DD is almost 13 months old and in the last few weeks she has been getting upset/annoyed when we are feeding her, particularly when the food is gone. She flings her head back in the high chair (which is cushioned, but still).

It seems to happen most at breakfast, when she has weetabix with milk and fruit - she starts crying halfway through. Is this a standard development thing or could she be hungry?

She is tall and on 98th percentile, so I am very wary of giving her too much food (she never refuses food - except broccoli!), and she was late to crawl and isn’t walking yet.

Does she feed herself at all? Finger foods etc?

She does - most other meals she feeds herself. She is fine with small items but crams larger bits into her mouth. She has also recently started putting her hands in her mouth with each mouthful, but I thought that might be to do with a tooth coming through.

Maybe I will have to think of some finger foods for breakfast...

Yes...it could be a bit of frustration at not being in control. She might not fully understand the bowl's empty....and think "Why have you stopped!?"

You could always get one of those bowls with a sucker on it...so she can't tip it up, then once you've got most of the serving into her, hand her a spoon and let her finish alone. She'll just dip her hands in probably but that's a start at learning to use the spoon.

We have one of those sucker bowls, she loves it. And I do let her feed herself with a (loaded) spoon when I have time/energy (I am not in the best of health, so don’t always have the energy for the mess - I am working on this though).

Will try to let her feed herself breakfast over the weekend when DH is home too and see if that helps.

I know what you mean re. energy and mess! Weetabix is the worst to get off too! It hardens doesn't it!
