Hi,
ds is 11 mo old and just started biting us, it really hurts! We've tried ignoring it, tried saying no in a loud & commanding voice, tried moving him away from us & turning our backs, tried saying no and that it hurts and mummmy and daddy don't bite so ds shouldn't and none of it has worked. Been advised by parents and well meaning friends to bite back, slap, put salt in the mouth but don't really want to. Any other advice?

my 9 month old is doing this, i'm putting it down to the fact that he is biting everything at the moment, as he is teething like a demon, he's not biting to hurt, he's just doing what he does with every object he comes across...so although i do say 'no' and pull him away, i don't really see the point of even doing that (he doesn't really get 'no' yet) and i figure, when the teething is over so will the biting be (i hope)...biting back/salt etc: no way, totally inappropriate imo...these are babies we're talking about and even if they weren't imo modelling the behaviour won't stop it it will make it worse...

Try not to make too much of a fuss - just say something like 'no, biting isn't nice', pull away from him, keep calm, and eventually he should stop. I agree with sophable - an 11 month old is far too young to understand what he is doing, all you can do is keep calm and not show emotion. My 11 month old ds has started biting a bit and I reckon the worst thing to do is get worked up about it or he will think it's a game. (like the blowing raspberries game and the putting your tongue out at strangers game that dh thought it was a good idea to teach him months ago)
