Potty training 3yo ASD boy

Our DS is 3.5 and we'd really like to get him out of nappies, if possible, before DC2 arrives in early summer.

We previously tried by putting him in pants, but he just wet and pooed himself constantly and showed absolutely no signs of letting us know when he wanted to go. He was also terrified of both the toilet and the potty and either refused to go on them, or screamed. So we put him back in nappy pants because clearly he wasn't ready.

He's happy to just sit on both potty or loo seat now, but won't 'go' on either. Recently we moved him to towelling lined potty training pants, so he's definitely feeling wetness when he goes. But he still won't tell us if he needs to go, and if we ask him if he'd like to use his potty he tells us that he is sad, or that he's going to cry.

Do I persevere with the training pants? Is there anything else I can try?

I’d carry on with the pants and I’d also get him some books on potty training, your library should have a selection. I’d also post your question in the Special Needs section, you may get a few more responses Smile
