does time-out work?(no luck with naughty step, pasta jars, sticker charts, distraction, ignoring them etc)

i am currently looking after my 5 yo cousins every saturday but sometimes they are just so naughty for me.

they won't get dressed when i ask them, when i ask them to put their toys away they deliberately get more out and throw them around, if i take them to the park and say we have to go they run away in opposite directions so i'll manage to get one and the other is off then when i get that one i've lost the first!!

they constantly start food fights with one another and push and shove and i'm at my wits end.

they aren't just like this with me, they are like it with their mum but she is at her wits end with them and doesn't know what to do next. she tried the naughty step but they wouldn't stay on it and turned it into a game more than anything with their mum chasing them around the house. i thought maybe time-out where they were made to go into say the downstairs loo and the door was held shut so they couldn't escape. would this work or not?

most of it is that one of them will egg the other one on to do something bad.

time out can work with some things, but i dont think you should shut them in a room alone.get a seat/cushion or something and put it in a corner (not facing in the wall though, they need to see you still). don't let it get into a game. calm and quiet removal and explanation of offending items (food,etc) to be returned upon good behaviour is fine. time out could be used but the behaviour and punishment has to be consistent.

they won't stay put on a seat or cushion that's why i thought the shutting the door thing. i'm sure i saw this on something like supernanny?

I was spent most of the day going to and from the front door/street/livingroom with my children aged 3 and 4 because they were being just as bad. They just would not listen to me, so everytime they did not listen we went back into the house, got undressed again and I sat them on each their chair, until they promised they would listen again. No talking allowed, every time they talked meant we would have to sit there for another 3 minutes. They got the message after 4 hours . You need to get the message across that you are the boss not them and you need to do it asap.

i think shutting the door and holding it is if they need to saty in the room for a reason - like going to bed?
