18mo bangs head when tantrumming

my 18mo has started banging his head while throwing a tantrum, seeking out things on which he can bang his head and hitting his head with his hands if he can't find something. I put him somewhere safe (travel cot) if it really ramps up, but I would obviously prefer to find a way to calm him before it escalates or to dissuade him from doing it.

He has always been a person who knows and communicates his moods very effectively and I am pretty sure this is a phase related to being able to talk a little but not a lot. He is otherwise sociable, engaged and interested in us and the world, so don't have additional developmental concerns.

Has anyone else dealt with this and found good ways of coping and handling it? Thank you.

I think it’s a pretty normal phase. My DS did it once, realised it hurt then would fetch a cushion and put that on the floor before he did it again. A friends DD only did it once she’d had a look around to make sure everyone was watching.

I used to just leave my DS alone and go and make a cup of tea Smile

Mine did this around the same age, went on for a a few months. Quite normal I think
