1 year old crying when I leave him at Nursery

My little boy has been going to Nursery for about 6 months now (he’s 15 months) and he’s always gone off so happily and never batted an eyelid when I’ve passed him over and gone. The last 2 weeks he’s got a little upset when I’ve left him, last week he was under the weather so I can understand that but this week he’s been fine but has just cling onto me for dear life and cried when I had to pass him over. Which breaks my heart to see!

I had noticed he had got a bit clingier at home when he’s left in a room and can’t see you/get to you. I was just wondering if it’s a normal phase? It’s so upsetting! Hoping it’ll pass soon as I think this is more heart wrenching than unsettled nights!

Sounds normal - of course he doesn't want his mum to leave him.

My son is now 6 but I used to feel awful dropping him off as a baby. The thing is, I'm glad long term I went through with it as he is perfectly well adjusted now and I enjoy my job and I'm glad I didn't give it up. He started to enjoy nursery more from about age 3 when he started making friends there. Now at age 6, he loves his afterschool club.

In my opinion, it's not ideal from a small baby's point of view to be going to nursery but you need to weigh everything up and do what's right for the family as a whole and do what's right in the long-term. For most people it isn't a choice as they need to make money to house and feed their child.

Thank you for the reply. The Nursery he’s at has an app where they upload what he’s upto and typically he was fine as soon as I left. He’s only in 2 days a week, but this has worked perfect up to these last couple of weeks. I know he loves it once he’s there. It’s just the horrible mum guilt you get at hard drop offs isn’t it!
