Failed hearing test

My 5 yo has failed his hearing test at school. ‘Significantly’ she said.
She said sometimes it’s caused by a recent cold, but not usually this much

I’m just really worried now. What are the chances that this is nothing?!

He already failed his sight test and now had to wear glasses. I don’t want him to have to wear hearing aids too.

Should have added he’s doing fine at school. Never any concerns and he’s reading and writing well.

What hace they said will happen next Mol? Hace you been offered a follow up appointment?

The National Deaf Children’s Society hace a Helpline which may be able to answer your question. I don’t know if you still can, but you used to be able to become a member for free too.

If he is deaf, it’s not the end of the world, he’ll still be your beautiful boy Smile

My DS failed his hearing test a few years ago when he was 5, he is almost completely deaf in one ear and now wears a hearing aid. He’s doing well and one of the top of the class, it has caused him no obvious problems but we’ve noticed that since wearing the hearing aid, he gets less tired and is better behaved in school.

There’s a good chance that this is glue ear, which is a temporary condition and will go away when he gets older. He might need grommets (to help the fluid drain off) rather than long term hearing aids.

Apparently we will get an appointment in the post for a hospital appointment.
I just can’t believe it I really thought I’d have noticed.
He is a bit congested and his speech sounds a bit nasal following a nasty cold we’ve all had so I’m hoping it’s just that? Though she did say kids don’t ususlly fail this much if it’s just a cold :(

My DD had glue ear and needed grommets. She failed her hearing test really badly. It was a complete shock to me too, her speech was absolutely fine and I couldn’t believe I hadn’t noticed. After the grommets were put in she said she could hear the school bell for the first time Shock

Arapaima · 22/02/2018 05:48

She’s fine now by the way - the grommets came out and her hearing is normal.

Thanks for the reply. It’s good she’s doing alright now!

He had his appointment today (we got a cancellation thank goodness) and he has mild hearing loss due to glue ear.

So we are now basically waiting to see if it clears up on it’s own.

Ok, that sounds like good news, yes?

Mol1628 · 10/03/2018 07:19

Yes good news. It’s likely temporary and no damage done.

That’s good news Smile
