Tips for potty training 18mo ds

No, I'm not mad trying to potty train him this early. He needs a circumcision, and I want it done asap, so the sooner he's out of nappies the better. We have a potty (good start ), he's out of nappies for most of the time we're at home anyway because of the pain when he wees.

Help getting him on that potty would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

My dd was reluctant to sit on her potty for absolutely ages, so you have my sympathy! We found that what worked for us was regularly sitting on the potty fully clothed, at times when she didnt actually need it. She would sit on it and we would read books and she got to enjoy the time she spent there (!!!)

Then I got her a potty training book and we swapped to reading that whilst she sat there until she got the idea of what it was actually for.

We are still in the middle of training now and it is a bit of a slow process for us with good days and bad days. I've found it's helpful to have a potty in every room, although it doesn't look too great when visitors pop round and there are pottys scattered everywhere!!

you can't potty train a child until they are ready. I think it's hormonal- if they aren't getting the signal to the brain that there is a wee/poo coming then it just isn't going to work.

I do know people who have kids that have potty trained that early, but tbh with you it's quite unlikely to work.

He sat on the potty for dinner today! He's known for a while when he's having a poo, and has recently been comig to me just before he poos. He also knows when he's going to wee, (most probably because of the pain, rather than a 'feeling'). He also asks regualrly when we're in the bathroom to sit on the toilet, which I let him do.

ds1 was out of nappies when he was 2.11, he just wasn't ready before, so I can see what you mean hairymclary, I just want the pain to stop for him, so wondered if there's a way to hurry him up.

bump. Anyone potty trained early for medical reasons? Rather than because dc was ready?

Poor wee lad, GG what a shame. Sounds like he's preety ready though.
Have started potty training DD today. But now ran out of pants so nappy back on (I'm doing it all wrong I know). I guess you just have to keep plugging away. Sit him on pot every 30mins if necessary and keep mopping up. People used to potty train at 18mnths so no reason why you cant as long as you can take the hassle. You sound pretty easy going about it too me. Stick in.

Why don't you put him on a thing that fits inside your toilet if he is too small for the toilet? Ultimately that is where you want him. Just skip the potty!

We've been sitting ds (23m) on the potty at every nappy change for quite a while. He gets to read a book while he sits there, which he really likes. DS is still in nappies, so we haven't gone as far as you want to, but he does usually do a wee, and a significant proportion of his nappies are dry.

DS doesn't really know when he's going to wee - except a second or so before - and he seems to have no idea when he's about to poo. So if we can get to where we are without that, I would have thought you'd do much better given that your DS seems physiologically more ready.

We took dd out to Woolies to buy some stickers and let her decorate her potty herself, s it was special to her. Then we painted over the stickers with clear nail polish to make them wee-proof and wipe-clean!

Some great ideas, thanks, will start putting them into practice. He did a whole wee in the potty today. Perfectly timed, I pulled his pants down just as he was starting. Pure fluke I'm sure!

That toilet seat looks good, thanks for the link M2FD, I didn't know you could get those. So much easier than faffing about with the other child seats.

He's shown a real interest in the toilet too today, I've sat him on it quite a few times, he seemed to like it so much that he was pushing me off!

Good luck GG - as others have said people used to potty train earlier so it must be feasible and I do hope your ds's pain gets sorted out. Poor chap.

Just wanted to say there are some toilet seats like the ones M2FD suggested but with side handles which a lot of people recommend - the little one can cling to the handles and feel a bit more secure - might be worth considering - think that Mothercare do them?
