Where's my angel baby gone??!!

My usually very social and happy baby has become a crumbling mess of tantrums, crying and moaning. She is usually such a sweetheart and everyone comments on her temperament, but just lately she has been acting like she's in the terrible twos and she's only 11 months! Is this a normal developmental phase? She's also very frustrated because she is a lot more active, but not quite walking, so perhaps this is part of the reason. Just wondered if there was anyone else who has gone through this and come out the other side???!!!

I don't know, but I am watching this thread with interest. My nearly 10 month old is also behaving like this..........I am completelt mystified and totally knackered...

teething? my little girl had a terrible time with the back ones. Just one of a million things i guess.

I never has the social happy baby to begin with. He was always like this so I can't help really, though I'd assume it was to do with the mobility thing. Frustration is a terrible thing!!

I was just coming on to post almost the same thing! my 9month old dd keeps having mini tantrums/screaming fits if she has to do something she doesnt want to, ie have her nappy changed, sit in her pram etc etc! its awful isnt it! she still hasnt got any teeth so could be that, and also cant crawl/walk yet so maybe she is frustrated. My mum kindly told me yesterday that I have spoiled her by picking her up a lot and pandering to her all the time?? can you do that with such a young baby?

Hope someone comes along with some experience as you've just described my son perfectly! Also 11 months, also very active but not quite walking. I'm hedging my bets between frustration and first molars. But by heck I'm getting quite scared that if this is just the thin end of the wedge where tantrums are concerned we're in for hell in a few year's time. Will watch this thread with interest!

Hello; I wanted to post because I went through this exact same thing with my DS between 10-14 months and I fully appreciate the despair. But rest assured it is only a phase and in his case it was a combination of molars cutting in and not walking yet (although I don't know if it was more frustrating for him or me!!). He walked at 15 months and almost immediately reverted to sociable type. I would suggest Nelson's teetha for the teeth and encouragement for the walking, but huge amounts of patience and gin and tonic for your sanity!! As testing as it is (and I know it is!), it is so overwhelming for them and must be a nightmare being in pain and not being able to do the things you want to do or even talk about it- sorry, don't want to be lecturing but I found seeing it from his persepecitve often got me through it. This phase happened to a lot of his friends and I think you're all right, it happens whenever there is a big developmental surge. Just try and remember that like everything these phases don't last and your changling will come back to normal soon!! and on one final note, I personally don't think you can cuddle and pick them up enough! Hope that helps.

Ok nellieloula, I am taking comfort from the fact that your DS grew out of it. All I need to know is that she will be a happy bunny again one day, and I can get through anything. (Well almost anything!!) Deep breaths and a very large glass or two of Rose to celebrate the coming of Summer should do it!
It's funny, she's in bed now and looking like an angel, and the world seems like a much better place again!!

Oops! Also meant to say thanks for posting with similar experiences. Looks as if there are a whole lot of us tearing our hair out at the same time. Very comforting!!!

i also think that as a new mum you think you have to wait for the terrible twos for this to begin so its a bit of a shock when your angelic good natured baby starts acting up!

I think they are just preparing us for teenage years . Everyone I have spoken to has said girls are harder than boys (and having one of each I am in agreement). Obviously being the superior race we have to practise from an early age in being stroppy in order to get our own way. DS and his cousin (a girl) were playing today and she was being a right little stroppy pants (she's 16 mths and he's 18 mths). He just kept looking at me as if to say 'what am I doing wrong?!', I told him to get used to it, just wait until you get a girlfriend, Sonny!!!

My DD (10.5 months) is a toothless wonder but otherwise is the same. She had her first full on tantrum complete with going rigid last night (we'd had mini-versions before) and all because I took her out of the bath and she wanted to stay in.
Personally I'm rather enjoying it. I think it means she is starting to realise she has her own mind and wants and she is becoming a proper little person.

Its very reassuring to know I'm not the only one with a stroppy little thing! I am desparately trying to encourage her to walk and move about a bit as I think she wants to do soooo much but just cant manage it at the mo! I could see the determination in her eyes as she was trying to pull herself up on her cot earlier, but after a few tries she got so cross and frustrated and through herself back and screamed! Bless her, I will continue to help her as much as I can.
Mummymia - i totally agree, my dd is fast asleep (at the mo!) and looks like butter wouldnt melt!

Mine's sleeping too and looks like an angel in fact I'm sure she has a little halo above her head, I now forgive her for all her stropping about earlier and her 'why are you so mean to me' screaming fits when I wouldn't let her play outside before doing her homework....ah, the pleasures of having a tweenie .

Oh God, bath tantrums, have suffered those!

I now let water run out before taking dd out, and although she looks slightly confused we don't have a tantrum!
