Speech

Just got back from DS's 2.5 year check and don't know what to think! I put on the form that he sometimes joins two words and doesn't do sentences yet. DS was in a mood when w got to the appointment and didn't say a single word all the time we were there!! She said they expect short sentences by now and a 300 word vocabulary. I flagged her up at that point and said hang on, lots of his friends don't do sentences yet! Then she backtracked and said that's totally normal at this age. She's ringing me in three months to see how he's doing. But she didn't take his receptive speech into account at all. He understood everything! And he's naturally wary of strangers so didn't like her trying to chat! The thing is, this boy can tell me that bees make honey and sheep need to be sheered. He can say shadow and point at his shadow. We're constantly reading and chatting with him. He starts preschool next week. Arggh!!

I think most children are talking in sentences by 2.5 but from the sounds of it I wouldn’t worry. I don’t really like HV visits I find them a bit intrusive, I’m sure if you think he’s fine, he is.

Thanks so much for the reply. I'm worried now but I know I can be a worry wart and get anxious about things! He's so engaging and kind at home but can come across as distant with strangers as he is quiet and doesn't like strange people. I'm really hoping preschool will help being with other children more etc.

Yeah my DD is better now but she used to be absolutely awful with strangers.

Pre-school will most likely really help with his speech as well.👍 DD has her review at 2 years 3 months and at that point she was only putting a couple of words together but not at 2.7 she is such a chatter box!! Her speech has really come along a lot in not very long. You will perhaps find your sons speech really starts to snowball now he’s got the basics.
