Could colic start at 5 months?

My ds is 5 months old and for the last 6 nights has woken frequently in the night, arching his back, extending his back and sometimes crying inconsolably. He sleeps fine immediately after a feed in the night (breast or formula) but wakes fretful after a couple of hours, and while he will fall asleep in our arms, or in our bed with us, as soon as he is put in the cot he wakes.
Our nurse said it could be the start of colic (eeek!), but I thought that started much earlier and generally finished by 5 months.
Feeling rather desperate as nighttimes seem to have gone downhill in the last 2 months, and all my ideals (no dummies, getting him to settle on his own and not sleping with us) are being scuppered!
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Have you changed his milk?

No, he's on breastmilk except his 11pm feed, which is formula and we haven't changed the brand or anything.

Sorry, my first post was meant to say arching his back and extending his neck backwards.
