What age did your dc understand time?

My dd is nearly 7. Despite seeming to be okay at maths she can't seem to work out the time e.g. If it's 8:50 and I ask her how long is it till 9:00? She can't work it out. She knows there are 60 mins in an hour and 30 mins in half an hour. Is this normal or should I be trying harder to teach her? For background information she has mild ADHD/Sensory processing Disorder (still being assessed) and is dyslexic.

I think that's pretty normal at that age and hopefully she'll grasp it in the next year or two. But I do imagine that if she's dyslexic, she might find it a bit trickier than other children.

For the time being, you could get her to look at the hour hand and tell you it's between 7 and 8, just a little after 9 or almost 6 etc. Once she's comfortable with that, you could take a battery out of a wall clock and play with it - making the time go forward (make sure the hands always travel the right way so she doesn't get confused).

And also note that she needs to be good with her 5 times tables and adding extra numbers mentally to work out things like 8:43.

Is not the actual clock she struggles with (I haven't even got to that). It's the concept of 8:59 being 1 minute to 9:00.
