16 mo. boy can't stand alone or walk?

Hello,

My ds is 16 months and just started to sort of army crawl and bum shuffle. I've been trying to get ds to stand alone but he is still wobbly, he doesn't pull himself up on furniture but does cruise only to the right. I'm trying to not worry as he is slowly progressing but I'm afraid if he still can't walk when he is over 24 months? I've had PT come to our place but didn't seem to be helping that much. Has anyone had any breakthroughs? I keep telling myself he will get there eventually, but still worried since he seems delayed in a lot of other areas. The doctor hasn't found anything wrong with him but had some concerns of his hearing since he doesn't know any words.

Our DS waited till he was 18 months - when he knew he could do it safely!

Hi Ferguson2,

Did your ds crawl at all or know any words? My ds started crawling around 15 months but he can't go from sitting to crawling or vice versa, I always have to help him get into position. He doesn't know any words and everything he says is just different variations of "ahhh"

He's delayed in other areas like can't feed himself, no words, doesn't have the pincher grasp.

If he's delayed in several areas then I think it would be a good idea to have him assessed by a developmental paediatrician. Ask tell your GP to refer you (you are in the UK, right?). You could also self-refer yourself to the National Portage Association, who should be able to assist and support you in encouraging him to develop these skills.

DD is 22 months and will still only walk holding my hand. She will take about 10 steps on her own walking from me to daddy but only with lots and lots of encouragement, it wouldn't occur to her to walk anywhere on her own. She's only been able to sit and stand herself up since about 17-18 months. The health visitor hasn't been overly concerned because she is making (very slow) progress. I am going to take her to the Dr though to see what he thinks.
She is however doing very well with her speech and fine motor skills, probably slightly better than average and always has been for these.
I'd be pushing for a referral if I were you just because he's a bit behind in more than one area.

Agree you should be referred to the peaks. What did your HV say at the 8-12 month review?

I'm in the US actually, just like oysterbabe, my ds doctor isn't overly concerned he seems to be developing very slow. I've had a physical therapist and speech therapist come but it just didn't seem to really help him much. At his 12 month check up the doctor said he is doing fine and asked if he was walking yet, wasn't really concerned then either. Do any of you have tips on how to help him achieve those milestones? (Stand, walk, feed himself, learning words)? I kind of do feel like it's my fault for not teaching him how to do things before he turned 12 months.

It is not your fault at all and it sounds like you are helping him as much as you can.

You can encourage physical development by allowing opportunities for it to happen but sitting, pulling to stand, walking etc are to do with muscle tone, co-ordination and other thing that aren't taught.

It's great he is cruising, only going one way is fine as he's just started but you would expect that to change in a couple of weeks.

Not sure about the US system but what you are describing here with a lack of pincher grasp, difficulties with other gross and fine motor skills (does he have eye hand co-ordination?) lack of speech etc would mean a referral to the peads and prob 6 monthly reviews.

What did the physios say after their assessment?

He's been cruising on furniture the same way for more than a couple weeks. His last check up was at 15 months the doctor did say that he is kind of delayed but not too concerned. His hand-eye coordination seems fine to me, but I don't know why he won't hold onto a toy or anything with both hands, it's always one or the other and if I tried putting his hand together he pulls one away.

Does he have something he can push around for some support? Like a block cart or we have a wee car that the sitting part came apart to create a V that they stood behind to push around. It was Fisher Price.

I use to put mine in a high chair next me whilst I was making dinner with some sultanas or grated cheese. This really helped with their pincer grip.

I’d focus more on the physical as it isn’t uncommon for them to be nearer 2 before they talk. My DS said very little before 2. Now at 7 he can’t be shut up! Just keep using the same simple words when giving him things or doing things.

He does have a push walker toy, he gets scared when I stand him up just holding on to that alone, if he leans and the push toy moves forward he won't try to take a step but just holds on with legs in the same place then just falls over or I catch him.

He can eat some table food but he prefers stage 2 baby food, I have some trouble with feeding him too, he always looks like he's interested in our food but doesn't eat much of it than he does with baby food.
