Just wondering.

My 23-month old has been doing so for about 2 or 3 months, I think. But I've no idea whether this is normal or not and cannot remember at all when my now 10-year old starting doing this stuff.

hana · 10/04/2007 19:05

and getting it right?!
dd2 has been naming colors correctly just before she was two. before that it was a bit hit and miss, she knew names of colours but didn't match up correctly

zippitippitoes · 10/04/2007 19:07

i think it depends how much time you spend on it..colours are something like numbers which i would always use when speaking to children from the start

so I always refer to the colour of something in conversation

also play rhymes and things with colours

Hi Tinker.

I was a bit surprised when DD (just over 2) started naming colour (I assume the nursery are teaching her) and I would never have thought to teach her about colours. I suppose when people argue about nurseries being bad I can point out that to dipsy mothers like me they are a godsend

Hi dros. Yes, before my youngest started at her new childminder's in Feb she thought most things were green...

Oblomov · 10/04/2007 19:14

Ds was about 2. I think that is the norm, pretty much.

JARM · 10/04/2007 19:14

Jessi was about 2.

frogs · 10/04/2007 19:16

Dd1 could do it at 18 months, but that was freakishly early. Dd2 at the same age could just about say 'byebye' and that was it. She didn't do colours until at least 2.5. I think I'd be worried if they weren't doing it by 3ish.

drosophila · 10/04/2007 19:20

I wonder what else she should be doing that I have no idea about.

when the nurery said to me that ' yes well off course we will be introducing her to using a spoon and a fork in readiness for using a knife ad a fork....' I just nodded and thought jeez DS (7) still prefer to eat with his hands.

Ds started to name colours at about 16-18 months. He took a real interest in it though - it started with him picking up different coloured crayons and pointing at them, wanting to be told what they were.

Tatties · 10/04/2007 19:25

But he doesn't use cutlery!

singersgirl · 10/04/2007 19:26

At DS2's 2 year check up the HV said it was unusual for a just 2 year old to name even one colour consistently, so I think from 2 is the norm. Mine both knew them by about 20 months, but I never consciously taught them.

Hi Tinker dd also 23mths is amazing with colours - purple like barney
red like mummys old car
silver like mummys new car
She can also name about 30 animals and do their noises and tell you what they eat but thats another story, she's animal mad!
When ds was that age he could just about string together " I ds I 2" and I was SOOOOO proud

Tinker · 10/04/2007 21:16

Hi northstar I still remember when your baby fell out of the pram and you were so worried. She sounds great, really funny

bozza · 10/04/2007 21:16

DD is nearly 3 and she can do all the colours apart from she mixes yellow and purple up for some bizarre reason. DS though was much better and younger, and at this stage was getting into shades of colour etc.

misdee · 10/04/2007 21:17

dd3 says everything is pink!

tinker she is a complete nutcase, walked at 7mths (before she learned to sit) ran at 8 mths, out playing at 13mths. I should have realised she was just trying to get a head start when she got out that pram at 8 weeks! She's upstairs now singing the wheels on the bus to a snoring ds!

jollyfolly · 10/04/2007 21:20

ds can name colours now at 23 months but a bit hit and miss..... the only ones he gets right most of the time are yellow and pink (!?)......

MegaLegs · 10/04/2007 21:21

My DS3 is 3 1/2 and still gets muddled. Developmentally he seems completely average in every way but he really struggles to name colours. HV says she will refer him for a colour blindness test before he starts school as it may effect his career choices(LOL) hope he doesn't want to be an electrician.

Tinker · 10/04/2007 21:21

I love that, playing out at 13 months.
