Dyslexia

Have i spelt that wrong? I think my son is for quite a few reasons, can anyone tell me what to look out for? I asked the teacher and was informed i could do nothing about finding out until he was 7. Seems quite a long time to wait, he is 5

We were told by ds school that boys are late developers. When he still couldn't read at seven we decided to move school and he had an ed psych test him. She didn't believe he was although he had some very low scores in certain areas compared with high IQ.

He in particular couldn't copy the test drawings and or retain information in a certain way.(bit vague about the details now)

Very noticeably he never scribbled or drew unless forced to. He didn't like books or construction toys or even toys in general to be honest. Any way he was tested again at 10/11 prior to going to a school with one third dyslexics and he was then said to be dyslexic and also strange pencil relationship (some kind of name for this but not sure what). He has just done gcses with extra time and all work done on a laptop. He can't write capital letters and in fact hardly ever writes anything he has only recently started signing birthday cards himself he used to get his sisters to do it. and his reading and spelling are now pretty good, although he does get unfamiliar words wrong eg the word ergonomics was in his dt exam and he couldn't read it.

Only from personal experience I would say that he was late talking, had a stammer when he was little, hated school, was generally miserable,with low self esteem until his difficulties were properly recognized and he went to a completely different style of school. I wouldn't have thought he was the same boy (but he has still never read a book!) He is still very wary of trying anything that he thinks he won't succeed at and very good at making other people do things for him which involve any reading or writing. He has a very good memory but still reads individual words so has difficulty understanding what he's read.

Sorry rather a ramble and probably not much help, overall I think the sooner you find out if there are problems the better.

My exh never diagnosed as such but we came to suspect that he had something because he always got left and right muddled up eg when being directed in car me right he go left. Also exh was competent at maths calculations and theorems but useless at arithmetic.

I think dd is also dyslexic but (very bad mum) she was never tested. But she had same problems copying especially from the blackboard, and difficulty following the story through a book when reading herself. But she loves drawing and her handwriting is good. Strangely she was extraordinarily bright as a toddler and could read words up until she had MMR then it stopped. Ds had the same MMR at the same time as her and he was hospitalised after with meningitis type illness, i have always suspected some connection especially as their type vaccine was subsequently withdrawn.
