When did your dc start talking?

My ds started saying mum at about 5-6 mnths and then just cont from there.My dd was the same and by 3 you could hold full conversations with them.I'm asking because my niece 3.5 can barely use simple words and I'd just like to know what seems to be the average.

Also, how long does it take to get a speech therapist as my mum is desperate for some help and was wondering how long it takes?

no idea my dd has been saying the odd word for a while its only now at 18mths she understands the words she is using and uses them properly - most of the time, she still calls everyone apart from her dad, sister!

dd was 7 months when she started saying 'mama' 'dada' and 'cat' and at just over 2 now she's extremely chatty and has no trouble with complex sentances and will attempt any word

my cousin however didn't say a word til he was well over 2 and my other cousin couldn't even say mama at 18 months and both are fine now at 10 and almost 4

i'm sure the hv will have picked up on your niece though and had her assessed if she thought there was a probelm, 3.5 does seem very late.... has she been refered yet do you know?

Hi singingmum,

dd said mama at 4 months, had 4 words by 6 months, used short sentences at 13 months, now at 17 months has, God, I dont know about 100+ words, a few 6 -7 word sentences but most 3 - 4 word, counts to 10, knows half her abcs..

Im far, far from an expert on this but im fairly sure that the average child should have 40+ words by 18th months.

I dont mean to worry you at all but to be honest I would be quite concerned if my 3.5 year old only used simple words...

Sorry, but I have no idea about the speech therapist!

Thanks all.We know she's been refered but are waiting and it just seems really difficult at the moment.It's like she just stopped developing at 18months.She is getting better but we all want her to learn so badly as they are now saying she won't start school with the others in her nursery and also her behaviour has gotten worse.She hits kicks etc because she's so frustrated that she cannot say what she wants.
Am keeping fingers crossed that she'll be seen soon

Rebecca is almost 18 months old and isnt talking.... she will say dadda and ta but that is it.

Im concerned because Jessica has always been a chatty one and strings complex sentances together now at 2.8yrs.

Hoping time will help as we have a family history of not talking til 2yrs old!

Our DD was referred to a speech therapist just before her 2nd birthday - It took 6 months from referral to get the assessment and now she is on the nhs waiting list for therapy. They estimate a further 6 months for that . We are on the South East London/Kent border but I guess times may vary from area to area. We actually decided to get private help before the nhs assessment date came through and have been working with her for 4 months now already, and are seeing some progress. It can never hurt to find out more from an assessment anyway, even if if is unclear to you if there is a problem or not. Good luck

My ds didn't talk properly until he was almost 5. He's now 13 and top of his english class, so it wasn't cause for alarm, the school he went to put him straight into speech therapy, turned out he was simply lazy, ask your nieces' prospective school what they do. Does your niece babble or make noises? Do her carers understand her babble?
