how does a single mum teach her ds to wee?????

right, ahem. he sits down to wee which is fair enough, no problem. but when we are out and about he wees down drains etc and i have to hold his, erm, willy! he doesn't seem to know how to do it and i fairly obivously can't show him!

also it seems to 'spray' sort of which someone said in the pub (don't ask) can happen if you don't do something-what, i can't remember!!

he did express an interest in standing like the other boys at school but freaked out at the last minute and sat down.

is he a bit young for me to be worrying about this?

Don't worry, he will definitely learn; after all, being able to make use of bushes and trees in this way is a male perk which he won't want to miss out on! I taught my ds when he was 3 just by talking with him about it, eg talk about aiming, talk about not splashing because it will be smelly and dirty, talk about why it is not nice to sit on a dirty public toilet seat, talk about why it is very private and he should be holding it himself. We never talked about his foreskin except to repeat my doctor's advice which is that till the boy is at least 4 no one should even try to retract it because it is a self cleaning organ and delicate. Perhaps you should start by teaching him to stand up at home. Do you think a stool would help him, as the toilet can be quite high for little boys? When my dad visited, I got him to take ds to the toilet with him a couple of times too.

I saw something on ITV This Morning-I think it was called a 'Wee Man',it clipped onto the loo and was just the right height for little boys,I've looked on their website but theres no archive section,but I would expect they could give you the details if you contacted them.

Um, just a thought, but I don't want to encourage my ds to wee standing up, simply because it's less messy if he sits down. DH always sits (at home anyway), so it just seems normal to ds. If he goes to stay with BIL,(occasional weekends), he comes back wanting to wee standing up, but after a couple of days sits down again

qiute happy for him to sit down(like you prefer it really!) but the 'problem' is when we are out and weeing in drains etc that i have to hold his willy and he is starting to look a bit old now (for me to be holding it) iyswim.

You need to pull back the foreskin slightly (not a lot or it will tear/hurt) to stop the spraying. My dh has taught our ds (3.5) to wee standing up. I seem to remember it involved demonstration (obviously not an option in your case) and aiming for the water at the bottom of the toilet. I think they began practicing outdoors on trees and things (in deference to my moaning about the puddles of wee on the floor). The training involved aiming for a tree/rock etc. Get him to hold his willy himself and point it at the tree. He will soon get the hang of aiming it. Bring a few changes of clothes for the dribbling/bad aim. And don't forget, lots of encouragement even when he wees on you as he's turning around to show you how well he's doing (happened to me!).

I wouldn't worry. Your DS is 3.5, right? Well DS1 did his first ever standing up wee today and he's 6, so don't think he's 'behind'! DS2 has no interest, apart from laughing when watching DH, and he's 4.

He'll pick it up from his friends at school etc when the time is right! Have you any male relatives/friends who wouldn't be too freaked if he 'observed' IYSWIM? (sorry, that sounds a bit weird, but hopefully you see where I'm coming from with that!)

Incidently, DH says that you need to pull the foreskin back a bit before you 'let go', and that stops it spraying.

lol at the thought of any of my male relatives allowing him to observe!!! think i might suggest it to my brother just to see his face

handy to know about the foreskin bit though (theres a sentnece i never thought i'd say ) a bit sick of it going everywhere.

Well i never new about the foreskin thing, i just have held it and he kind of took over after a while. I'm not sure he even pulls his foreskin back, i'm really amased. Now i have to leave this thread as i can't get it out of my head my son is 50 and its making me a bit hysterical. I will try and think of something more helpful when i stop laughing.
