Autism Worries

26 month old boy, a close family member, displays the following behaviours. I am worried he may be autistic, do you think I am worrying about nothing? I've tried to encourage his mom to take him to the GP, but she says he is just being naughty/difficult.

  • says maybe 2 or 3 words, no sentences, and only uses them occasionally
  • doesn't respond to name being called the majority of the time
  • has poor eye contact
  • doesn't seem to understand instructions
  • prefers to play alone
  • gets very focused on a narrow aspect of playing, for example examining a tiny hole in the ground for a long time
  • play usually consists of a cycle of arranging, unarranging, arranging etc of toys, or using a toy house to fill with as many small toys as possible, then taking each one out again

Well he is or he isn't.

As he's not your child there's nothing you can do.

It will get picked up in nursery when he goes in all likelyhood.

I know he's not my child, but he is my grandson so of course I worry

There is an online test called M-CHAT which you can complete. This will give you a score; discuss this with a health visitor / GP.
