Newbie! Worried about 9.5month old...

Hi everyone, first time posting 😊

I'm wondering if anyone can give any advice.

LO is 9.5months old and has just started to attempt to crawl but doesn't get very far. Sometimes shows interest in trying to pull up, but if you hold him he likes standing up. Just mastered rolling and will not stop sitting up in his cot!
He smiles when you smile and when you walk into a room, isn't overally cuddly.

My areas of concern are...

  • doesn't wave or clap hands just stares at you!
  • doesn't poke his tongue out
  • doesn't point / does put his arms up to be picked up
  • plays peek a boo but when you put the cover over him and me
  • responds to his name only 40% of the time (I can be right next to him calling him and he ignores me)

He will copy me and makes sounds with his finger and bottom lip and thinks it's funny.

Also opens and closes his hands and twirls feet a lot and kind of shivers. More so when excited or is feeding.
I'm worried about the above. It points to ASD and I'm worried I have no knowledge of it and so don't know how to help him!

Thank you all x

Mummy - it does not sound like major red flags. I have only had limited experience with ASD (my friend's DS has recently been diagnosed) but I know a lot of babies who didn't wave or clap for a while. They grew into happy and sociable children.

Here is a blog I came across when I learnt about my friend's situation. Some of the earlier posts are very informative and outline red flags and things to watch out for:

I know this is an old thread; your baby sounds similar to my almost 10 month old, just wondered how he is doing now?

@Mummytobabyboyblue. How's his hearing? I was just wondering if it's worth getting his hearing checked to rule that out?

Welcome to MN too Smile

My ds also has development delays due to neurological issues. His physio told me, we don't worry if a baby develops slow, we worry if they don't develop at all. It sounds like your son is progressing just at a slower rate. Don't worry unless a health care provider tells you it's something to worry about. All babies are different and reach milestones at their own rate.

Hearing test and sight test might be good ideas though just in case and for peace of mind.
