5mo in 9-12mo clothes!

Ds is now 5.5mo. He has always being big, was 8lb3 at birth. He has always being in bigger clothes for his age. He is in 6-9mo tops, and 9-12mo bottoms. (Can never buy a matching outfit !!). HV was concerned last time he was weighed as he has gone from the 91st centile to the 98th. He is a very hungry baby and is already on solids (from 5mo), as well as hungry baby milk. Is there anything I can do? Overall he is very healthy and happy but HV being concerned has worried me.

Is it that he is overweight relative to length or just that he's huge all over?
HVs seem to frequently get het up about things that don't matter, so I would really not worry. However, at this age you are setting up how he responds to hunger/ fullness cues, so if you are actually overfeeding him and he's racking on the pounds but not changing centiles re length, then it might be worth considering alternatives, such as whether you are offering food/ milk at times when he would actually be fine with just a cuddle. However, that's a really big "if" and you may well not be overfeeding! It's just something I have thought about as I have an 8.5 mo in 2yo clothes, who is extremely tall and fairly solid. He's a shocking sleeper who would quite like to feed all night thanks very much, and genuinely seems hungry for a feed about 6x per night as well as 9am, 11am, 12pm, 3pm, 5pm & bedtime 6pm, and three meals & afternoon snack. I am trying not to bring up a child who eats when bored, so seem to be bringing up a child who eats all the bloody time and can't amuse himself either...Confused

He is tall yes, we knew that from birth. His legs are really long, but his dad is 6ft4 so we wasn't surprisedGrin it's the body weight in which he has jumped a centile. He is 20lb3. Looking at him you wouldn't think he's a chubby baby at all, just Looks much older than he Is! I don't think I am over feeding as I do try everything before a feed. But when he's hungry, hes hungry, and he doesnt half let every know Grin your LO sounds very similar! Ds has bottle at 7, porridge 9, bottle 11, food 1, bottle 3, food 5, bottle 8, bottle 10, smaller bottle around 12 (if he wakes up). He does sleep all night though. HV has never being concerned once until he jumped up.

My daughter has just turned 6 months and is in 12-18m clothes. She is 99th for length and 75th for weight. You just have a big baby with a great appetite. HVs love to have something to worry you about - it's their job and they see some awful things so it's understandable - but I agree with the PP that they tend to overdo it with the caution. Take it with a pinch of salt. If you're really worried then see your GP but I would just enjoy your lovely healthy boy 😊

My DD is 5.5 months and in 9-12 month clothes too as she's 99th centile for height (75th for weight). She's EBF and not on solids yet but def a hungry baby too. Genetics has a role to play and like adults babies come in all shapes and sizes. She's not even the tallest or biggest baby in our family so I'd also take centile charts with a pinch of salt. Doesn't sound much of a centile jump either.

Mine jumped from the 2nd to over the 91st,your HV would have had a field day with me (most of this was whilst being breastfed too with the odd bottle of formula). He is close to 98th now I think at 16 months and over two stone. Not fat ay all, just really tall! My friend always says how delighted her HV is with her 50th centile DS who has tracked it since birth, they love an average baby. I wouldn't worry at all OP, he might slow down a bit when he moves maybe (though this hasn't happened to me, mine has gone up a centile since crawling and walking...his appetite increased to match).

DS was off the top of the weight chart and heading upwards at 5.5 months, at two he had settled back to the 99.6th and now at almost three he's on the 98th. He's tall too. I think 5.5 months was the peak for him of a huge weight compared to height and I've seen lots of babies go through that big stage at that age, before they really get moving around.
