My ds has been being weaned since 20 weeks and loved everything offered to him. He had no problem taking fm a spoon etc. Just this past week he has taken to screaming at mealtimes and I don't know why. It is starting to really worry me now as I end up giving fromage frais/mashed banana etc.just so thatI nkow he has had something to eat. He will eat savoury things too but seems to gag/choke which results in me yanking him out of hte high chair which must be frightening for him. I was givng lumpier food but have reverted to pureeing everything agian inteh hope that this will cure the problem. I thought yesterday that this had lessend the problem but today he was at it again. I am worried. Any advice/experiences welcome.

Also been having yukky nappies recently too. Are they linked? Sounds obvious I know but I am not convinced either way

maybe he is reacting to you pulling him out of the highchair since he went onto slightly lumpier foods, I know it is easy to say but you need to stay calm when he is gagging on lumps otherwise he will get panicky. Is it possible that he might be teething, this would make him go off his food (especially lumps) but he might enjoy the cold fromage frais and would alo explain the yukky nappies? hth

Firststeps - thanks for response. Just to clarify, the screaming starts about 5 spoonfuls into the meal. This causes the choking/gagging which sometimes necessitates me getting him out of the highchair. I am guessing tha the is not ready for lumpier consistency food yet and he is totally uninterested in finger foods. Am concerned he might not be eating enough. Bloody weaning!

My lo didn't really take to lumpier food - he went straight from purees to finger foods (btw he was also totally uniterested in finger food for a long time) he would also gag on lumps, hope I didn't sound like a pita when I was saying to stay calm when he is gagging, just I know how you feel as my lo used to be the same. The reason I mention teething is my ds goes off all his usual favourites like spag bol and just wants cold things like cheese, yoghurt and fruit

Sounds a bit like your ds might be teething, my dd went right off her foodabout the same age and that was teething. I just let her have what she would eat, which wasn't alot, quite amazed by how little food she could exist on. But she soon started eating again.

Hi cruise, not been around for a bit and sorry to read this. DS1 missed out the lumps stage too - have you tried just giving a stick of carrot, breadstick, pitta bread bits? Gave DS2 some baby carrots to munch on the other day for the very first food and he loved it (he was 26 wks yeaterday).

Deffo sounds like teething Cruise.
Espeically with the nappies. Has he had any nappy rash?

cruisemum1 · 27/03/2007 17:43

I think it could be teething CM.
As it produces acid, hence the sore bum and possibly the vomiting.

How is he now?

cruisemum1 · 28/03/2007 09:38

he's happy. thanks . no lumpy food today.
