Is it weird to teach a 3 year old the words penis/vagina?

My DH is upset with me as when my DS pointed and asked me what his sister had in the bath, I responded that she has a vagina. In my mind, there is nothing wrong with this, after all it's the correct name for it. Is it weird that I have taught him this? He's nearly 3.

My ds knows his is a penis. I think it's really important they use the proper words.

Those are the words my DC know as well, DS is almost 3yo. They are the proper words for the body parts, what did your DH expect you to do, invent a word or use a silly one like front bottom?

ChorusLine69 · 20/07/2017 22:26

Booboo- yes, he thinks I should have called it a foof or some other bloody stupid made up name! Good to hear I'm not unusual in preferring the correct anatomical names!

Yep, proper names here too!

Although I'm waiting for someone to come along and say it's a vulva...

My ds calls it his penis, I don't see why not. He has asked me if spiders have a penis, and told last night he told me his penis will get bigger if he eats lots of vegetables, :)

I'm Surprised at the responses here, whilst I don't think it's wrong to use the correct names I think it's pretty common little boys use a different name until they're older - willy, winky whatever. I would say that Is more apt for a toddler

Oysterbabe · 23/07/2017 13:48

It's very important to teach the correct names and there's no reason not to, it's just another part of their body not something shameful that we have to disguise with flowery language.

sowhatusernameisnttaken · 23/07/2017 13:51

I think most little boys say willy rather than penis and I don't think that's saying that body part is shameful in any way.

Penis or willy are both fine to teach your child. It's like saying stomach or tummy, both acceptable words to use. I don't like when people make up silly words though, like a pal who calls her vagina her Mimi??!
