Worried about development

I'm worried about my nearly 8 month old. I have 2 DD's, my first DD was early to sit, crawl, walk (walking at 10 months) and talk. DD2 only just sits up. She can roll over on to her front but that's it. Won't roll onto her back, no sign of crawling. She isn't very vocal. She is fussy eating. I'm just worried that there is something wrong or I'm not doing enough.

There is autism on my DP side of the family.

It's not really time to worry yet. Saying that, i had similar concerns with my DS around the same time! You'll have a check up at 9-10 months but I think if she's sitting, holding up her head whilst on her tummy and able to bear weight on her legs, the likelihood is that they won't be concerned.

My DS sat unsupported at 7 months but has only in the last 2 weeks gotten into the actual crawling position rather than commando. He's now attempting to coordinate his arms and legs at a week before he hits 9 months. He can stand but won't pull up or cruise.

Your DD is still young to be hitting some of these milestones and it's very possible to have children of the same parents develop at very different weights. I wouldn't be concerned as yet but if you still have worries when it comes to the developmental check in a couple of months, raise them and I'm sure your HV/GP will be able to give a more expert option and refer you for additional support if needed! Smile

Different rates not weights haha!

Also, to add, my DS also has been rolling onto his front for 2 months but only been rolling onto his back in the last week Smile

Thanks Beccii, the HV is coming today so I might mention it. I know parents are not meant to compare children but honestly don't know how you don't 🙁

Dd sat at 9 months crawled at 12 months and walked at 16 months.
It's very normal.
She also would never roll tummy to back

My first DD hated tummy time. Barely crawled ever, but she walked at 11 months. Was climbing ladders before that, though. But she never rolled. Well, she's 6 now and obviously can do it, but it happened so late it was pretty irrelevant by then. Very late talker but she had severe glue ear for 2 years. Second DD is 16mo and, while she CAN walk unaided, she refuses to let go of my finger. Late crawler. Rolled about a fair bit though and she talks gibberish constantly.... Basically, no two are ever the same.

8 months is young to be concerned. My first DD crawled at 7mo, stood at 8mo and was walking unaided by 11 months. She spoke early too.
Ds sat up on time, then did exactly nothing until his first birthday when he bottom shuffled a bit. At 13 months he pulled to standing and at 14.5 months let go and walked. He is just 2 and didn't even talk till 22 months- now he is talking in 2-3 word sentences. They're all completely different - it's hard when your first child does stuff quickly then you compare but try not too, your dc2 is likely totally fine

Hi Chaplin, perhaps check with your health visitor when the development check will be, and maybe try to hurry them up a bit if you're concerned?
Afraid I don't have much advice to offer, but personally I'm finding my daughters development to be much lumpier than I'd expected. I had been getting really worried as she wasn't rolling at all by 8 months and didn't seem interested in solids in the same way that other babies I saw were. However, in the last month (she's now nearly ten months) she has learned to roll in both directions really smoothly and quickly, can get onto her tummy from sitting, is commando crawling and has started clapping an pointing. I have to admit I still worry that she isn't crawling properly yet, but at the age that your baby is now she was doing virtually nothing - perhaps your baby will also suddenly have a big burst of development? Her appetite also really picked up once she got more mobile, she now eats all kinds of things, although she's definitely a finger feeder and hates eating off a spoon
