Toddler hair fiddling

My DD (2.5) has always been obsessed with hair. If I give her a cuddle, her hands are in my hair instantly and she twiddles her hair to self-soothe as she falls asleep. She came downstairs earlier tonight because she'd got her hand stuck, and my husband said her finger was purple. I checked on her when I got home, her fingers were in her hair again and the tips were blue.

I'm assuming this isn't safe?! Any tips on how to break her of the habit? I think she would be devastated if we cut her hair - she is always playing hairdressers with dolls/other people, and she's loving the fact that her hair is now finally long enough to have ponytails, plaits etc.

Don't know what to advise on that one sorry. If her fingers are going blue that sounds quite dangerous.

Yeah, it's really not good. I mentioned it to nursery yesterday so they can keep an eye out during naps.

Is her hair long enough to plait? Would that stop her doing it? Maybe try to introduce a substitute?

I'd be worried about her fiddling with the hair band if I plaited it - she likes to put them round her wrist. Maybe if I just plait it without a band, she may fall asleep before the plait unravels completely!

She likes to have toys in bed, she had a doll for a little while but she has completely matted up its hair so the doll has fallen out of favour.
