Breastfeeding question?

Hi everyone I am so confused! My baby is 6 days old today and I had a 3rd degree tear and then bad reactions to antibiotics which gave me horrendous diarrhoea for a few days. I was very dehydrated but also not eating. Over that now but still not got a huge appetite - I am working on that but was advised to stay on carbs and protein (no dairy and veg) for a few days to keep the diarrhoea at bay. I have been keeping myself hydrated (could I just be providing water though??) and persevered with breast feeding (it was some dark days!) but even though the baby is latching (or seems to be) and is now on the milk she hasn't done any pooh in a nappy today and is being a little unsettled today, keeps feeding but then it's a wet nappy again. Is this normal?? What should I do if not? Is my diet lacking therefore hers is? I am also so hormonal and worried and I just can't seem to think straight!! Thanks for any help!! I just can't think here xx

Oh Xanadu sounds like you have a had a tough start but everything you've described sounds good. If you want some more reassurance, I'd call the MWs, if you are in the UK, or one of the Bfing Helplines Smile

Forgot to add, what you eat will have very little affect on your milk. Please have a read of this on Kellymom for more reassurance Smile

Thank you so much!! I can't tell you how much this has meant to me xxx

How are you getting on today @Xanadu44? If you have anymore questions on feeding, I'd try the Infant Feeding Section. There are some really helpful posters hanging around in there Smile

Just to add as well that it's totally normal for a breastfed baby not to poo every day! In fact they can go up to about 10 days without it being a problem! As long as they have wet nappies and seem ok in themselves. Sounds like you are doing a great job and if will get easier! 😊

Xanadu44 · 30/06/2017 19:48

Thanks everyone!! She is now doing at least two massive dirty nappies a day and a hell of a lot more wet nappies! Phew! She has had horrendous acid reflux and wouldn't sleep on her back BUT it's day 10 and I finally feel like we've turned a corner! Thank you so much for all your lovely replies and feedback, it really means a lot! This has been the hardest time of my life and you really helped xxx
