6 month old very fussy at breast

Hello. My 6 month old DD has become very, very fussy at the breast at some feeds over the last few weeks. HV advised starting solids which I have duly done and we have had two small meals a day and are just moving to three meals. She is frequently thumping my breast, doing the funky chicken with her elbow, and scratching at an area above her ear with her hand. It is worst on the right side (where I am fuller). She also feeds for a short time and comes off and cries and squirms and doesn't want to go near the breast. It is sometimes wind but I can't seem to get her to settle back down after we have brought up the burps. Any ideas? She is also now getting up 2 (sometimes more ) times in the night for a feed and I feel that she is only snacking. I can't seem to get her to go back off without a feed.

Mine did this. Turned out let down was't happening quickly enough for DS's liking and he would pull my poor nips around like anything the little imp, on off on off beating them up wailing burping, sounds like your dd. Advised by lactation counsellor to twiddle the other nip to get the hormones racing, apparently improves let down. Can't remember how long this lasted but know it was around about the time he started eating solids.
Just when you thought bf is sorted they go and throw something else in the mix!

I know, that is part of the fun isn't it (she says trying to convice herself that this is fun). I think that sounds like it could be at least part of it. I am sure let down does happen within first 10-30 seconds. I will practise my nip twiddling!

Did your DS stop doing it with the help of nip twiddling? How did it resolve itself?

It did but only if I twiddled beforehand and didn't leave it until when the tugging child was getting fractious! (sp?)

On a tangent I used to get the let down feeling on my right shoulder blade instead of my boobs. Weird.

Ooh, that is weird. Like getting displaced pain.

Could be teeth. They really pull at their ears and my second is a fidgit feeder when teething. I'd finshed bfing before DD1 cut teeth so this is new to me too. Would cause the night waking too (last night was awful for us). Try Calpol or something on her gums maybe....hmmm maybe I should take my own advice.

redvanmum · 21/03/2007 17:49

hmm, had crossed my mind. She doesn't seem to have constant symptoms of teething. She definitely has spells of red cheek and howling that are defo teething. Maybe this is another manifestation of it.

Let's both try the Calpol tonight and see how we get on

Teeth seem able to bother them for ages before they actually break the surface. dd2 is nearly 1 and has just got her first 2 but there are lots ready to push through. I've got thrush back too so my nips are very sore anyway so it's all a PITA at the moment!

redvanmum · 21/03/2007 18:17

just tried to feed her, she has taken some from left and then cries every time I try to put her to right (I am pretty lopsided after 3 bouts of mastitis in right)

My 6 mo is doing this too! Waking more at night, fussing at the breast..
I was worried she wasnt geting enough and started taking fenugreek today, noticed slight increase in breast firmness..
Anyway, my DD2 is tugging and faffing about with my nips too and its not funny cos one has a big scratch on it that she did a couple of days ago. Have just started her on solids this week - doesnt eat much but she's starting to get the idea... am doing purees and also letting her play with and knaw on food i.e. banana chunk, white rice...(no teeth yet)
Am going to start BLW/purees thread elsewhere, anyone else at this stage please feel free to join me there!

malaleche · 21/03/2007 18:28

will start other thread later...

redvanmum · 21/03/2007 18:43

will look at your other thread later as I am veering between purees and BLW too.

Is fenugreek for milk supply? I was a bit worried about mine but right breast engorged again now and I definitely am having strong let down at most feeds and less strong some other feeds.
