10 mo not crawling - reassurance needed!

ds is just 10 mo and not crawling - i don't know any babies his age that aren't crawling and 2 of them are walking now. Love the fact he's not mobile at home but all other mums are going to soft play areas now and I'm not getting invited as ds not mobile

am also going back to work next month and don't want to miss out on seeing him crawl for first time - was bad enough thinking i'd miss his first steps

should i be worried about him not crawling? when do you think he'll start? he rolls really well and pushes up on arms but doesn't get his bum up, he sleeps on front (has done from 6 weeks) and is happy to play on front so i know its not that...

lots and lots of babies don't crawl at 10 months, I wouldn't be worried about it
(and why wouldn't you get invited to softplay places with these friends who have mobile babies? there would still be things for your son to enjoy!)

DD didn't start moving until 10.5 months and then it wasn't proper crawling, more a sort of shuffle (but it got her along fast).

She started walking at 15 months and now at nearly 18 months is trying to start running .

DS crawled at 8.5 months and then walked at 15 months.

Don't worry about him not being mobile yet - it will happen, but sorry that you aren't being invited to things. Can you go along anyway?

My ds started crawling just before 11 months and then walked 5 weeks later - daft boy!! He was really tall and really heavy and is now really tall and lanky (like his mother!) It will happen - don't panic - you won't even remember the issue 6 months from now.

My ds was still a bit on the wobbly side sitting up at this age, didn't crawl until 13 months. He is 2.5 and as active as all the rest. I went to a coffee group when he was about 9mths old (was really worrying inside about his development) but after getting over the fact that he was the only non mobile baby I also realised that I spent the entire 2hrs sitting drinking my cuppa with my ds either on my knee or down beside me playing while the others ran around like headless chooks scooting children away from hurting each other, rescueing them from under tables, removing objects that belonged to older childrn of house hold etc...I was the only relaxed one there

Is he sitting OK?

Not all babies crawl insy. My ds1 didn't at all, cruised around the furniture then went straight to walking. ds2 couldn't get his bum up either and did this odd 'commando crawl' - but not at 10 months, later I think. And dd bum-shuffled.

My DS started to crawl at 10 months. Long after everyone else's babies were crawling. I wasn't worried - was just relieved I could leave him in one place
He walked at 14 months. He is 7 years old now - plays soccer and cricket, very co-ordinated etc.
DD sat like a pudding and looked like she would never ever move. At 11 months I noticed she wasn't quite where I left her when I had left the room for a bit and came back. For about 2 weeks she had me stumped. I would turn my back while she was sitting playing with toys and then I would turn back and she would have moved a foot or so. It was like she oozed across the room It was like she was like that guy in the wheelchair in Little Britain
Anyway, she turned out to be a bum shuffler. She did that and never learned to roll over until she was about 14 months. When she could roll over she worked out how to crawl but realised she was better at bumshuffling and she had the added bonus of having her hands free
Walked at 15 months.
Now 3, climbs, runs, hops, jumps, stands on her head - no problems

Ds was still stuggling to sit at that age. He started crawling on his first birthday, which was nice. First steps on Grandmas birthday at 16 months (he knows when he has everyone's attention I think). He is fine. It is hard with your first baby not to worry about these things. Ds was my second so I was just so so grateful that he stayed where I put him!

Re missing him crawling for the first time - instruct the childminder or nursery not to tell you if he starts crawling / walking. That way the first step that you see is his first step! .

insy - my ds didn't crawl until 11months just when all the others were finding their feet!
I would try not to worry too much (easier said than done!)

Hello! just read the OP so forgive me if im repeating anything! I wouldnt worry, hes still very small - I have often read that some babies never bother to crawl atall!! - he may just get up and walk later on. Also, gross motor skills like crawling, walking etc have nothing to do with how intelligant your child is, he may just not be bothered!.

I just want to say - in regard to going back to work, please dont be worrying about missing all these things - This seems to be a common thought but just because you are out of the house for a few hours each day doesnt mean you dont see your child - I work full time and I have not missed one of dds "firsts" - words, crawling, steps etc... I know its hard but please put this out of your head.

DD1 never crawled, never walked with furniture - literally stood up holding onto a cabinet on her first birthday and took her first step. All ckildren are different your DS has plenty of time yet and I'm sure will just do it when he's ready.

DS2 is also 10mo and not crawling. I'm counting my blessings as when he does there'll be no stopping him.

Took ds until about 11 months to suss crawling. Walking at 15 months. He never rolled until he could crawl and despised lying on his front (now he sleeps on his front all the time).
Now 19 mo and you wouldn't be alble to spot the early rollers/sitters/crawlers/walkers tbh...

I have to agree with everyone else. My dd1 was very placid as baby (oh how things change). She didn't even roll until she was 9 months, screamed if you put her on her front. She crawled at a year (up the stairs on her second day!). Even when she walked, at fifteen months she back down on her bottom for another 2 months before doing it again.

I don't see why you can't go to soft play places. You can sit there and be smug drinking your tea while your friends have to chase after their little ones.

Dd is almost 12mths old and still doesn't crawl. She's not interested in it at all.

There's no reason why your ds can't go to a soft play area. I'd be annoyed with the other mums tbh.

thanks everyone for your messages - i just needed to hear it!

today i sat him by his toy box and he pulled himself up I clapped and then he tried to clap and fell over! but almost like he did it just to make sure i stopped worrying think i find it hard cause its the first question people ask 'is he crawling yet?' and then go 'oh well never mind i'm sure he will soon' looking as if i should be sad about it (which it is making me feel!) and i want to tell them what a great communicator he is (he signs which is so cool) but then realise i'm getting drawn in to the comparison... weekend at the MIL this weekend, last time we saw them she said it was because i won't buy him a baby walker (too expensive) that he won't crawl, apparently he also sleeps too much so doesn't have enough time to practise crawling! honestly - love in-laws to bits but they do speak without thinking most times

son never learnt to crawl properly,he did commando crawling (pulling himself along by his elbows)but never got up on all fours.
He walked at 10 months and was running on his 1st birthday.

If it's any reassurance, my mother told me none of us crawled when we were babies (i have 3 siblings), we went straight from sitting to walking. My daughter who is also 10 months is not crawling yet, although she was 6 weeks premature so you have to deduct six weeks from her age from birth, so I'm not panicked at all.

Don't worry all babies develop differently and in their own time. At the end of the day they all end up walking!! which is the most important thing.

One that's dear to me- I used to (used to being the operative word)go to an under ones group, and at 8 - 9 months every week other mums would be 'bragging' about their out of control mobile offspring and how many injuries they'd accrued whilst my DS sat there solidly like he had since he turned 6 months! At 11 months and a week he trundled off crawling, and is still at it 3 months later! Stands really solidly, cruises, and crawls like a rocket around the soft play centre whilst all his peers wobble around on their feet....I just keep thinking that at the age of 3 they'll all be walking and no one will care who walked at 10 months and who walked at 2!!!
BTW soft play is fab even for littleys,,,,

ds didn't crawl til WELL over a year - 13/14 mths perhaps - dd was 11 mths.
Crawling isn't a developmental stage (sure someone's said that, but not read all posts) - it doesn't matter a jot as long as his other development's ok. Go along to softplay & gloat about how lovely it is to put your lo down and not have them crawl off to play with the sockets!

Insywinsyspider - I was really worried about missing DS's firsts when I went back to work full time. I don't really think about it now though - it doesn't seem to matter as much as I thought it would. What matters is the first time I see him do something, as that's the first time we share it IYKWIM?

I wouldn't worry, ds didn't crawl until just before his 1st birthday and is now at just four coordinated enough to play the cello, climb ladders and dangle from great heights.

DD1 wasn't even walking at 14 months! I have fond memories of Mum walking round the labour ward with her, with her scarf under dd1's arms trying to keep her afloat!

It's not like you get to adulthood (or 8 years old,for that matter) and start saying 'I was crawling at X,Y,Z age, and out of nappies at (fill in the blanks).
