DS is a chunk!

My 2yo is built like a proverbial S**t house. He's quite short. Does anyone else have a toddler that has the "concertina effect"? He suddenly grows taller overnight, then before he seems to be approaching another growth spurt, chunks out massively. Help, as I can barely pick him up!!!

Had to reply to this as my DS is a bit chunky too. He is only just one though, and I keep thinking it is baby fat... Did kind of hope that when he started walking it would help him "slim down" but has made no difference so far. Got a big old pot belly on him and rugby player's thighs.

BigCookLittleCook, your DS will definitely burn it off. I look back at pics of my DS in his first year, and he looks like he was going to explode, he was so hefty. He's lost all the rolls on his legs and arms, his neck has finally made an appearance too! These growth spurts confuse me - I get him out of bed in the morning and his legs hang over the end of the changing mat. He wasn't like that last night, I tell myself. He can also reach for things that were previously out of reach. But it's the sudden appearance of weight gain that has us concerned. I'm just looking for assurance that before the height spurt is the weight spurt!

I have a chunky onetoo. I put a 14 month old to bed and a 2.5 yr old came out. He's 3.5, 3 stone, 3.5 ft tall.

I used to be paranoid as hell about it but I came to the conclusion that Martin Johnson's parents must have felt the same. So long as you know he's eating well etc etc welcome to the 'Blessed with chunky kids' club

My DS1 always starts to look a bit pudgy and then he takes a growth spurt - he is 3.5 now and I have noticed a big difference in his legs which are quite slim now but he still has a bit of a pot. His weight is fine for his height though according to HV.

my ds looks like a chunk (photo on profile if you want to look) but I think it's mainly because he's got a round face. His body isn't that chubby, but everyone calls him 'fatty' or 'tubs' and I find myself getting quite defensive.

Squonk, your DS is absolutely gorgeous. He looks a lot like mine too. All my DS's playpals are dinky little wisps of things. Oddly enough, they are the ones that seem to feel the need to be pushy little brats. Mine, on the other hand, does not throw his considerable weight around. In fact, he's quite shy!
I get V. defensive over people's comments about his size. he's quite short, like me, but looks to be a prospective rugby player...

I think that's it, cheechymonkey - all his little playmates are all dead skinny so he looks even chunkier...

Concertina effect here too! I can always tell when DS (nearly 2) is about to shoot up because he piles on the weight first. He's also very broad and stocky with a long body but very short, chunky legs. We were with a friend and her DD the other day and she changed her DD's nappy and I nearly fell over in amazement to see how slender her DD's legs were - she's not underweight at all, just built differently and it made me realise just how chunky DS is.

You're not going to be able to lug him around indefinitely anyway so he'll just have to lump it. My constant refrain to DS is "buggy or walking! no carrying! buggy or walking!" as he leaps around my ankles pleading to be carried. He ends up walking as he's too stubborn to get in the buggy - so at least he gets some exercise.

Snowleopard, I'm still folding my DS into his buggy. Got freaked out a month ago...the sun was out, I'd taken day off work and decided I'd collect him from nursery and walk home. Problem? DS is still at that trotting kinda walk. He took a nosedive to the pavement and put his teeth through his lip. Cue freaked out mummy and both covered in blood.
It is SO nice not to have to carry them round anymore, isn't it? DS only asks for a carry when he's upset so at least I can sit down to take his weight! V reassuring to read you've experienced concertina effect too.

I'll still bundle him into it if necessary - eg if we have to be somewhere in a hurry - but it's getting harder as he's so strong (and there's only a certain amount of red-faced toddler-wrestling you want to have to do - especially in public! I really like going out with him without the buggy actually, just holding his hand. Makes him seem so grown-up!

Have also had teeth through lip though - awful isn't it.

Tooth through lip was a HUGE trauma. Had to carry him to the house while he tried to pull off straggly skin on his lip (bleurgh). Didn't realise till later that night that he spat blood in my face. We must have looked like a right pair! Can you believe a woman parked up next to me on the pavement, cradling DS covered in blood. Looked at me, pretended she didn't, and shuffled quickly into her house we were outside. I mean, I know how cautious one has to be with blood these days and I had plenty of tissues, but if it was me, I'd at least have asked if I was OK. Tsk, the state of the world today etc. etc.

I get a bit sniffly when I walk with DS and find that I don't have to bend down to hold his little hand. It's going SO fast.

Hi, Our DS is chunky as well, people always comment on his future as a prop. Squonk, he looks very similar to your DS too.

I just wish people wouldn't comment. I don't think ds is particularly fat or podgy, maybe a bit chunky but that just says he's healthy, surely? He has the most vivid blue eyes, and the cutest smile - they could comment on these things instead if they absolutely have to comment on his appearance!

We get the comment "he looks like he eats well" all the time.

DH is jealous of DS's chunky calves, they're about the same size as his!

DD1 is chunky more so than all her peers. She is same height as them but looks like she is 8mths pregnant. She doesnt stop eating and at 14mths am having to think about moving her into 18-24mth stuff and she wears some 2-3 bits. Ds on the other hand was solid until he was 11mths then he didnt put any weight on for over a year and is only just now started putting it on again at 3.5yrs and weighing 30lbs[he was 28lbs at 11mths]

BTW, squonk your children are beautiful...

Nemo glad you said your DD looks pregnant as that is exactly the look DS has! Was thinking of starting a thread about protruding tummies. His is huge. He drinks a lot of water and it just seems to swell. The rest of him is not skinny in any way, but the tummy wins! His 12-18 month clothes are tight round the tummy and leave elastic marks , but they are way too long for his stumpy little legs! He is nearly 13 months.

I have exactly that problem with my DS too BCLC - he grows out of the waist part of his trousers long before his feet have reached the ends of the legs!

There should be a special boy's trouser shape called "stumpy" - there's obviously a market for it

Oh god I am ROFL at the "stumpy" trousers idea. Even DH laughed when I told him. DS never reached the ends of his 9-12 month trousers.

lol also have the problem of turning everything up as length is too long but her gut needs the room.. probably not helped by fact she is a cloth bottomed babe as well.
