People keep commenting on DS (12 wks today) having a small head. I took him to be weighed today and he was 12.8 which is the 25th centile. This was slightly concerning in itself, however his head is on the 9th centile, so now I am worrying more about that. Should I be??

the centiles don't mean anything to me but did the health visitor say it was unusual..bearing in mind that some babies have to be at the extremes?

is it a family trait?

if you are concerned then see the gp to discuss your worries your mind will probably be put at rest

don't forget the centiles represent the range of NORMAL. If he's on the centiles, even low down, he is within normal ranges.

I would talk to your HV and/or GP and as zippi said, they will probably be able to reassure you and put your mind at rest.

my ds age 1 is 90th for height and 9th for head!!!?

it worries me ...no one seems to care but it concerns me!

beckybrastraps · 07/03/2007 18:33

Ds was 98th centile for weight, 99.7th for length and 25th for head circumference. I used to call him my little pinhead. He seems fine, and indeed his head seems in proportion, now he is 5.

dd is 106 percentile height and weight and 75 percentile head, looks gorgeous. HV said her head is fine, just a bit long and narrow, like mine, the size is in the length, not the width too.

Thanks for the re-assurance everyone. I feel a bit better, now I've talked it through with RL people and you lot. Sorry that you are concerned too NaO, but when I saw the doc today, he didn't seem bothered in the slightest, so I'll take that as a good sign.

And another reassurance - DS1 at 8 month check was 50% for size and weight, and head was below 9%. It is familial, though, as I have a small head (can't ever buy a hat to fit, as they all just fall down). DS2 has the most enormous bonce, though.

My two both have small heads on the centile charts compared to height and weight - actually now that Emma is 2 it all seems more proportioned, in fact even Heather at 11 months is looking better too - boy was her head tiny when she was born! She was born at 35 weeks and weighed 5lb exactely but her head was so teeny! I have to say that I quite like my little pinheads and think it looks cute - those massive headed babies always freak me out with those big moon faces.
