When they are about 13 and then they just start grunting - so I've been told

I'm not sure. But DH does it sometimes as well (although not as often as DS).

I want mine to stop saying 'why' to everything! Its driving me mad.
Me -DD1 'come on you need your rain coat on'
DD1 -'why?'
Me - 'Because its raining'
DD1 -'Why?'

Aaaarrggghhhh!

ds is 3 and isn't doing it so much now, I think dd carried on for a bit longer.

Annoying isn't it!

Do you repeat the sentence too?

Is it driving you demented? Any particular one phrase today?

I have every sympathy -I did some baking with DS yesterday and from the moment we started to the moment we finished he constantly said "Can I lick it?" (ie the spoon,bowl and remains of cookie mixture). By the end I was somewhat frazzled.

Well my Dss are 9 and 7 and they are still a bit like that, especially DS1. i had the following converstaion with him yesterday.
DS "are we going out today"
ME "Yes we are going for lunch"
DS "We're going out for lunch"
ME "Yes, when dad gets back"
DS"We are going out for lunch today when dad get back"
ME" Yes, that's what i said - when he gets back"
DS" We are going out today for lunch"

aggggggggggggghhhhhhhh. I get this constantly with him.

DS1 3.6 has just got into a habit of saying 'pardon?' over and over.
It's got nothing to do with his hearing, just the fact that he doesn't concentrate when I'm talking to him (gets it from his dad )

So we have;
'DS1, come and get your coat on'
'Pardon?' (whilst driving his cars)
'Come and get your coat on'
'Pardon?
'Coat on. Now'
'Pardon?'

AAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!

Glad its not just mine.This morning:

ds "Mummy,why is it raining?"
me "Because the clouds have lots of water in and they are raining on us,because the water has to come out"
ds "Why"
me "Because thats what happens when the rain needs to come out of the clouds"
ds"why"
me "because thats what happens"
ds "why"
me loosing patience "I have just told you"
ds "why"
me "because you just asked me" aaaaaaarrrghhhh
ds "Mummy?"
me ,cautious "Yeeesss?"
ds "Where do squirrels poo?"
me "out of their bottoms"
ds "Why?"

Mummy has nervous breakdown.

We're also getting the slightly surreal questions like

why have I got hands?
why are there birds?
what are cats made of?

and no matter how well you answer its never good enough so he repeats the question again and again.

my 4 year old has been torturing us all weekend with "where do we live ?", liberally interspersed with "what's for lunch" and "where are we going today ?"

DS is 2.9 and has been doing it for a while (but it seems like an age!).

Oh, if he's stroppy he'll go "I don't like it, I don't like it At All!" or "yes, no, yes, no, yes, no" but he doesn't tend to really repeat questions over and over. Or maybe he does and I'm too vague to notice. I think I say "Yes, dear" quite a lot

I can do it just as well as she can

Also

We have also started recently with "Why?" but it hasn't got annoying. Yet.
