Games consoles -- how to restrict use of..

My 12 year old boy (currnently year 8), is becoming adicted to his PS4 and his school work is beginning to suffer.
His main aim when he gets home from school is to connect with his friends online and to play some mindless game until whatever time he can get away with.
He has begun to lie about homework and gets very angry if he is told to stop playing in order to do homework.
I have tried taking the controls away, and restricting its usage to weekends but there is great peer pressure amongst his group of friends who seem to be active on their consoles most days. Obviously I don't want to alienate my son from his friends but I'd like to know how to manage this behaviour.
Any good advice would be greatly appreciated.

Turn off the wifi.

That's what I'm doing today. I'm in Oz, it's evening here. When it gets to ten pm off it goes!
