How can she be hungry?

Hi

We fed our two-year-old from 12-1. She was crying and sucking her hands again at 2. Is this normal? We've also noticed that she's started making a clicking sound when feeding. Is that an indication she's not feeding properly?

Sorry I meant to say two-week old. Wishful thinking..

She could be hungry again, or wanting to suckle for comfort. I think both everything and nothing is normal in those early days! By two weeks I would have hoped mine were going longer than an hour between feeds though.

How's her weight gain?

The clicking can be an indication of poor latch, or that she's trying to break the seal to slow the flow down. I'd get to as many bf cafes and support groups and things as possible, they're so helpful.

My DD went through spells of feeding hourly, - it's totally normal and the only way baby can up the milk supply.

Doesn't make it any easier though I know!

Is there any pain while feeding or misshapen/sore nipples?

Feeds are timed from the start of a feed until the next one. So that's feeding two hourly if you start at 12 and she wants feeding again at 2. Totally normally for a breastfed two week old. Your body is building supply and you need to keep feeding. The clicking can be a sign or a sloppy latch so try to get to a breastfeeding support group for some advice on that. Be wary of having it checked by a midwife or HV who may have minimal bf knowledge. My Dc both fed every 90mins for first couple of months. Day and night 😬 You just need to power through! But do get the latch checked.

Mine did this. I fed her for an hour every two hours - so just had one hour off between feeds. Just get your dp to go to bed or sit in front of the tv, eat loads and give up trying to do anything other than feed. It passes.

And yes good idea for her to contact a local bf service and get her latch checked.

Absolutely normal. They feed almost constantly at this age. Just keep feed, feed, feeding.

Clicking can also be normal - all mine have done it at some point without there being an obvious problem. But do get to BF support groups if you'd like some reassurance.

My DS fed every 90 minutes for at least 45 minutes, (so only 45 minutes break between) and virtually continuously from 5pm to 10pm from about 2 weeks to 10 weeks. It was grim. But normal. If baby seems hungry, offer food. If they don't want it, they won't take it. They're used to 24 hour nutrition in the womb and their tummies are tiny, they're digesting the milk practically as fast as they can drink it.
It does get better, I promise.

My son wanted to feed for appropriately 18 hours of the day at that age.

When my daughter was that age she either slept or fed. I know that from about 5pm to 10pm she was just constantly feeding for a few weeks too. While still tiny I just offered my boob every time she was restless and she would feed most of the time. It gradually settled down as the weeks went on.
