3 Year Old & Elaborate Stories

Today DS has had been telling the most elaborate story at Nursery.

Since Friday he has told them our house burned down, all his teddies are ruined & the fire engines had to come.

Nursery rang me to make sure we were ok and DS may be traumatised.

I reassured them that not even a candle has been lit in our house!

I'm mortified.

Is this normal behaviour for a 3 year old?

It shows very impressive imagination, vocabulary and sequencing skills. Be proud! Quite normal for children of that age to have difficulty separating fact from fiction. He sounds fab!

Agreeed, nothing to worry about. DD (nearly 3) tells me she only plays on her own at nursery and that they give her 7 fish fingers to eat. This isn't true (I did check ) and not as extreme as yours, but just an example to illustrate they often enhance the truth at their age.

I completely freak out at anything like this. I'm not the most confident parent (lone parent) and always think people (inc nursery) are quick to judge! (Prob should start a thread on that to be honest)

7 fish fingers .... impressive

Don't really have any advice but wanted to let you know I am in the same boat. My just over 3 year old keeps making up the strangest of stories and then blaming others for it. My most concerning one is that when he hurts himself he seems to blame Dh even when he isn't here! The other day he was playing and fell over a toy. When I asked him what happened he said 'daddy hit me' which was interesting considering dh wasn't even in the house! Just hope he doesn't start saying that kind of thing to his childminder or nursery - or I'll expect a visit from Social services!

I put my 3 year old on the phone to my friend once to say hi - she proceeded to tell her all about our trip to the park that morning, what things she had been on, how she fell off the climbing frame and we had to call an ambulance, our trip to hospital and the x-ray where they found she had broken her leg, the plaster cast she now had on that we could write on.....
We hadn't left the house that day and I had to reassure my friend DD really was OK!
We had lots of incidences like that - very vivid imagination.
She is now 15 and doing very well at school - especially in English!

Itsnotfair10 - DD told them at nursery that her bruised leg was because I had got cross with her and pushed her down the stairs.
Luckily they knew her well and didn't believe it!

Maybe but a blank book and offer to write these stories out for him so he understands they should be in a book not in real life?

My ds 3 is so like this. According to him if your bold at preschool you are out sitting on the roof until a fire engine gets you down and today he told me that his preschool leader too him to hospital in an ambulance after he had been bitten. ( the bite part was the only true part)) , he's my third and his brothers never told such stories but you can only laugh

Lol! My niece told her nursery teacher that Mummy had left home...she'd packed a bag in the night, taken some of her toys with her and gone! she also said that Daddy thought she might be in France.

I think it's normal, mines the same though he hasnt told any one the house has burned down lol!
But I do understand where you're coming from of the lone parent/people judging as I'm in the exact same boat and my son is playing up something chronic at the moment and I dread people (nursery) think it's because I'm a bad mum!!

Mine frequently tells me there were no other children at nursery and they didn't give him any lunch, just an empty bowl!
