Biggest baby in the UK?!

My lg weighs 28lbs at 6 months old. She doesn't look hugely chubby as she's very long as well but I'm baffled - she was just over 10lbs at birth and is now in 18-24 month clothes. Soon we won't be able to buy baby clothes anymore! I'm 6ft 2" and my oh is 6ft 3" if genetics are to blame my dad was 6ft 7" so there may be something in that. She has around 34 oz of formula per day and I've not thought that was excessive. I've googled a lot and found no one else with a baby this big at 6 months. I've hopefully got the health visitor coming to assess and I'm hoping there's nothing wrong with her. Just can't believe how big she is! My back hurts a lot all the time 😁

She weighs 2 stone at 6 months old?! Are you sure that's correct?

Yep it is - her previous weigh in hospital and was 22lbs then at 19 weeks - I know! 😲

Wow! That's a big girl. Maybe it is genetic.

My baby is also a chunk. Long and wide. She's been off the growth chart for height and weight since birth so is totally in proportion but is massive compared to most babies her age. She's just turned one and now wears 2-3 and 3-4 clothes. I haven't got her book to hand at the mo but I remember she she weighed almost 14kg at 9/10 mths. She's been solely breastfed since birth so it doesn't seem to matter how these babies are fed..if it's in the genes it's in the genes!

If she is long then she should be on a top centile for height and to be in proportion she will be a similar percentile for weight.
Do you know what centiles she's on?
That does seem awfully heavy though. My 2.5 year old girl is bang on 50th centile for weight and 75th centile for height so she's tall but an average weight and she weighs 28lb too.

But in relation to formula, no that's not excessive. My 3 month old has a similar amount each day!

Insomnia - you're right it does seem heavy because it is heavy. Take that as gospel from the mother of an extremely heavy baby. However, that said, someone has to be at the top of the line and someone at the bottom. Your child is on the 50th centile for weight so at the halfway point on the chart and for this reason couldn't be compared to a baby such as OPs and mine as ours are on the top centile (or over the top in my case).

I find it slightly hilarious but also quite ridiculous when ppl ask me if I'm sure how heavy my baby is. Yep...my extremely toned biceps, her large clothing size and the scales all point to the same conclusion.

Sorry I realise this sounds flippant/stroppy but you wouldn't believe how often people make comments like this or just plain rude comments about how 'porky' my baby is

Well she's about "4 centiles" above the 99.6th centile for height and weight so off the charts for both therefore she is in proportion which is somewhat reassuring :)

Wow my near two year old is 24lb!!!

My daughter is a bit like this. She was 10lb born and now at age 4 she is in age 7-8 clothes with size 13 feet, but she is tall and in proportion.
What an you do? You can't stop them growing can you.

Mousy - my other daughter is same as yours. 5 and wears 8-9 9-10 clothes and is size 1 shoe. Only 1 child in class is taller than her and she's lovely and slim with it (the chunkiness as a baby vanished from about 3.

My DS was 2 stone at 6 months having been exclusively BF on demand. He then took to weaning like a duck to water. He just loves his food.

At 7 he is tall and very slim - you can see ribs and collar bones, no fat on him, tummy is hollowed out when he wakes up (ravenous in the morning).

It took a while to slim down, he was still very solid at 2-3 although he was always active and well. Some kids are just built that way.

In that case if both centiles are almost off the chart then she sounds perfectly in proportion and is just a tall heavy baby which you already know!
And you're right that someone has to be at the top and bottom! My friends daughter is 1st centile and at almost 3 is still in 9-12 month clothes! I get annoyed when she says how heavy my daughter is! Of course she's heavy compared to your 1st centile daughter, she's about 12lb heavier being on the 50th centile!!!

Totally agree insomnia. Your child is petite in comparison to all of mine as even my lightest and shortest was 75th centile for weight and 91st for height. So to hear your child is heavy makes me chuckle as to me she's as light as a cloud but then to your friend she must look enormous and heavy.

I've certainly learnt to keep my mouth shut about it as I've had some awful things said about my baby by strangers and I realise it can go the other way for people who's children are on the other end of the scale. Hard isn't it!! I just comment on cute clothes or lovely hair or whatever instead of saying anything about weight!!

I'd probably have a chat with the GP. probably just a big baby but worth having it looked at.

My eldest DD was 9lbs 6oz and she was 2 weeks early, and was at the top of the chart for weight and height, entirely normal, someone has to be top. Youngest was born on the 25th centile and dropped to the 2nd, where she has stayed. I wouldn't worry at all.

My friend'a daughter was 2 stone at 6 or 7 months. She looked enormous compared with the group's other babies, and was later to crawl and walk. Once she started moving she thinned out and 7 years on she's back in proportion (very tall though, but her dad is 6'4").

She was exclusively breastfed too!

As a general guide babies should double their birth weight by 5months old and treble it by 1year so your dd is heading for her1 year weight. But that is in an ideal world! I shouldn't,t worry,your dd sounds gorgeous, I am sorry for your poor back though!

My son was 11lb 9 oz at birth and by 6 months was 28lbs too. We were referred to a paediatric consultant cos his weight just went up and up. At one point he was so heavy the HV couldn't plot his weight as she ran out of paper above the graph. Their fear was that he might have a growth disorder called prada willie syndrome.

The consultant examined him and advised that there was nothing wrong with him. He said there is a big push in obesity now because of the obesity crisis so HV's etc aren't keen to admit that sometimes babies are just bigger.

He advised that babies generally are very good at self regulating what they eat whilst breastfed and it takes quite a long time to learn to override the fullness feeling that leads to people overeating.

Fast forward to now and I have a very active 2 1/2 year old who has dropped from way over the top of the graph down to the 98th percentile.

Forgot to add if you are at all worried ask for a referral to a paediatric consultant or go and see the specific paediatric gp at your practice. I can't count how many health professionals we saw who gave us terrible advice which when we recounted it to the paediatric gp/consultant they actually laughed at.

She is 6lb heavier than the 99.6th centile, and the charts take account of genetically tall children since they describe the weights of the whole range of healthy children. Only 4 in 1000 children are more than 22lb at 6 months old and common sense would suggest those 4 are only just above that weight. She ought to be referred to a paediatrician and then probably an endocrinologist to check there isn't something wrong. My daughter was referred to a consultant endocrinologist because she dropped just below the charts, but she was nowhere near as far off the centiles as that (and weight/height in proportion).

Mid-parental height would predict her being around 91st percentile, not off the chart.

I would chat with GP just for peace of mind.

My 4.3 year old weighs 2 stone 9 pounds.
