Does you child act as if they hate somebody?

My DD is 16 months old. She's a happy little girl with me and DH, settled in well at the CM, loves to see family etc, waves at strangers and seems to lap up attention.
However, whenever we take her to MIL's house, she screams. She's always been unhappy around MIL, crying when she's around etc, but it is getting worse. We left her at MIL house for two hours a few weeks ago when we went to the cinema, she cried the whole time she was there, refused to let MIL anywhere near her (is okay with step FIL).
Last week we went up for a visit, as soon as I put her on the floor to walk through the kitchen, she cried, and pleaded to be picked up. She then sat on my lap for the next hour (anywhere else she's off playing, emptying cupboards etc) and hiding her face.
What should I do? DH thinks we should leave her more often with MIL, I thinks she's obv not happy so dont want to do it. Obv DH wants our DD to be okay with his mum - what would you do?!

does she smoke? or where strong perfume? that might be off putting for a little one.

my dd wouldn't go near my bil for the first 3 years of her life! She wouldn't even look at him. We felt terrible as he is such an ordinary looking bloke. No glasses, no beard, nothing different at all. In the end we tried to find something that just they had in common. (Both their names began with the same letter). got her to draw a picture of the two of them together, talked it up and since then he has been number one uncle - loves him to bits!

She does smoke, but so does FIL and she's fine with him. She doesn't wear strong perfume.
DH thinks it may be because his mum "looks a bit like a witch" (his words, not mine!) but I said that at 16 months she wouldn't have any visual references to a witch?

Hiya, I've got a similar problem with my DD (2yrs) and my brother. when he walks in she hides, or stares at him, she's very clingy with me when he's around and doesn't talk to him.she does come round a bit once he's been in the house for about an hour. he does try with her but he talks quite loud sometimes so it could be that. not really sure what it is. I wouldn't worry too much apparently I used to cry and scream everytime I went to my grandma's when I was little, she was one of the nicest people you could ever meet & I loved her to bits. I don't remember being like this with her, I have no idea why? I think it's just a phase. who knows goes through the minds of our little ones
