Clapping and waving? What age?

Hi all

DC is 9.5 months and not clapping or waving (looks like might be trying to wave but not there yet)

Should I be worried? All other babies in nct group are... DC is quite a serious baby with others but very smiley and giggly with me and DH. Babbles and crawls... am I being neurotic? Bangs toys together etc. Googled it and autism came up which has worried me...

I wouldn't worry yet. They tend to work on one skill at a time, and develop at different times. So if your baby isn't very dexterous, he might have good gross motor skills or communication.

9 months is quite early to wave so don't worry he should start to wave and clap in the coming weeks. He should be having his pre 1 year check soon so you could always discuss this with your HV if you are worried.

My son started sort of waving at 10 months but he's 12 months old now and when we say 'bye bye' he waves. I wouldn't be worrying at 9m, there are babies my sons age who don't wave yet.

My dd has just turned one and has only been waving properly for a few weeks now. She's been clapping for a good few months though. My nephew who is the same age does neither but does loads of other stuff she doesn't.

Basically what I'm saying is they all do different stuff and different stages.

Will keep trying and yes have health visitor 10 month cgeck in a few weeks so will ask.

Just find it hard when other nct babies are - feel guilty for comparing etc. Plus Google is fantastic I some ways but in others should be BANNED!

Google anything about development in babies / toddlers and possible autism will be in the results. In truth you wouldn't be able to tell at this age. All babies develop at their own pace. Try not to compare with others.

Really don't worry yet - it's way too early and some babies like my DS1 never really clap or wave but are still completely NT. He's just very introverted - I used to lose sleep over it but the whole picture was that he was developing just fine.

DS2 did clap and wave but around 12 months.

Sorry I forgot to add DS1 is nearly 5 now and still hardly ever claps or waves!

We've had waving and pointing over the past two weeks and DS2 is just 10 months. No clapping though.

Following this as in the same boat! DS is 10.5 months and a happy little thing. Has babbled a bit but only ever dada and ba but seems to have shut up shop on that for now. Bangs toys together and is pretty sociable. Spending all his time cruising and try to escape at the moment. We have some half hearted waving on occasions but he's never clapped or played peek a boo but likes it when you play it with him. I'm trying to encourage the clapping through games and songs but nothing yet. He will flatten his hands when you clap them together so I think he understands what it is but isn't at the point of doing it himself. I'm the kind of person who Google's and then stresses though so I've lost some sleep over this! (I never learn) I can totally identify with the nct comment, there's a lot of girls in our group and they seem to be so advanced. It's hard not to worry!

My DS is 16 months and has only been consistently clapping/waving for about a month and has only recently started pointing. I can't get him to stop now!
Don't compare, it will drive you crazy!
