10 month old not responding to name

Hello, My almost 10 month old DD often doesn't turn to her name when I call her. Occasionally she does, but more often doesn't. It is more noticeable now that she can crawl at great speed away from me! Is this something that I should be worried about? I keep reading that babies should respond to their name by now. Or is there quite a big range for this? I'd be really interested to hear other people's experiences. I'm pretty sure her hearing is fine. Thanks for reading.

Is it because she is too interested in other things? My DD is 14 months and she will ignore her name if she is intent on getting something (especially something she shouldn't have!). Or is it that she has never really responded to it?

A bit of both really. She has intermittently responded to it in the past but never consistently. I understand it more when she is absorbed in something, but sometimes it's even when she's in the highchair in front of me and she's busy looking around the room.

Could be a hearing issue I would speak to health visitor.

I would get her checked for glue ear - its very common on small DC and is easy to miss. My DS2 had it from around 10 months old and we didn't realise. As a result his speech ended up being very delayed, which had a knock-on effect on his overall development. Make an appt with your GP and get it checked out. If her hearing is fine, then she's possibly just ignoring you!

I would ask for a hearing test referral.
Did she pass the newborn hearing test?
My dd has a mild/moderate hearing loss diagnosed at birth but until she was regularly wearing her hearing aids she would be inconsistent at responding dependent on background noise/concentration on another activity.
I genuinely don't think I would have noticed any problem at 10 months if she hadn't failed newborn screening.

Yep, agree, ask your HV to have a look. My brother had 2 grommets for glue ear when he was about 2 and it fixed it perfectly. Good luck!

Yes, she passed her newborn hearing test. I'd not thought about glue ear. Will have a chat to the HV when I next go to the clinic. I've been worrying more about the social/communication side of it. Dr Google always brings up things like autism.

Dr Google should be struck off. And I say that as someone who is totally addicted!

If you have any concerns you should check them out, but most of the time there is nothing to worry about at all, and we bring it all on ourselves!

Pretty sure neither of my children responded to their name at only ten months. They were barely crawling at ten months!

Babies develop at such wildly different rates. As long as you have no concerns about their hearing in general, I would not worry AT ALL.

But most likely your DC is too busy focussing on other things to listen to you. I have two DDs and the first one was just like that. Even now (aged 5) she doesn't always respond. No hearing issue. No autism. Just a bright, imaginative girl who is often in her own little world and concentrating on other things. My second DD on the other hand has always been very responsive. Just different personalities.

Not suggesting you shouldn't get hearing checked if you are concerned, but my DS was very much like this - he is 2.5 now and I have no worries about him (is a good talker, understands well, very social). He still can ignore me completely when he chooses.

I well remember driving my mum mad due to my ability to completely 'tune out' so I guess he has got it from me!

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to try and relax about it for a bit (and stop testing her!) but will also mention it to the HV.

My little boy is exactly the same and I’m wondering what the outcome was. He’s also 10.5 months and will only respond to his name now and again, more often not.

I had the same concerns when my little one was about 10 months and name response gradually got better over time and is fine now (unless I’m telling him no, at which he totally chooses to ignore me!). I was also worried as he was really late to point and wasn’t making usual babbling sounds like mama, gaga, etc at that age and wasn’t saying ANY words until 17 months. His language exploded and is now saying so much (he’s nearly 19 months now) and he’s changed so much all in such a short space of time. I have zero concerns now and can’t believe how worried I was! A long winded way of saying please don’t worry, they change and develop so much in such a short space of time and they will get there in their own time! I hope this helps to reassure you!

His. I have been extremely worried about my ten-month-old daughter, she a very happy baby, always smiling and responds to smiles. Loves to play and loves people is not shy of strangers. Dd has started rolling, crawling backwards, grabs everything in sight and puts everything she sees in her mouth I guess this is teething issues. My baby is a lockdown baby who has spent a lot of time in isolation, during pregnancy and after her birth, she hasn't had much interaction with anyone apart from her mum and dad. I am worried and have sleepless nights as she is not responding to her name or pointing clapping or waving. She does respond to her name sometimes but not a lot, should I be worried someone pls help .

Any update on your lil bub. My daughter is 10 months old and is exactly like that and I am being kicked in the gut by Google.... everything that I read leads to Autism. I am just too concerned and have such a bad time dealing with it.
