How do you potty train and how long 'should' it take?

Following on from an earlier thread..... How do you go about potty training and how long should it roughly take? I mean, if there are still lots of accidents after 3 days for instance should I give up? (DS is 2.6 years)

DD2 trained herself. She decided she wouldn't wear nappies, so I went with it, and we never had one accident.

I would- but I'm very lazy! My ds will be three in December and most of his friends are now potty trained or are doing potty training. A couple were really ready and simply said that they weren't having nappies any more and that was that-so aside from a couple of accidents (mainly in the car)it took no time at all. Some actively trained their ready dc and it took a long weekend. There are a few who decided that their dc were ready and are still having daily accidents months later. At the moment ds knows what the potty is for and when we're home I'll put him on it every now and then and he will wee, a couple of times he's said 'wee wee', taken his nappy off and gone so we might be approaching 'ready'. I think the general consensus is that if they're ready it shouldn't take more than a couple of days.

DS also trained himself at age three. Just decided one day he didn't want nappies. He had three accidents (all just pee, and all when we were out and about) in the first two days, then that was it - completely dry day and night.

He was just ready - I didn't do anything, really.

Waited until they were old enough, approx 3. DD just did it, no accidents, has never even wet the bed.
DS was 3.5, perhaps 2 accidents but has wet the bed perhaps 2x a month.
We went straight on the toilet, no Potty.

I'm just lazy tho, couldn't be bothered trailing behind them with potties constantly!

We waited until the summer holidays so she could run around bare bum

We had loads of accidents on day 1. It was a nightmare.

We had more accidents on day 2. Was considering leaving it and trying again later

However by day 3 she got it. And no more accidents after that

Ds 1 was 2 years 4 months, and after about 5 days he would be relatively reliable, with one Accident every day, mostly he would have a few drops and wet his pants before making it to the potty. After two weeks it he was ok to go to the park, short car ride, etc. With maybe one accident every few days, and after about one month had no accidents.

Three days is a very short time. I know that some children are just nappies off and all good within a couple of days, but in my experience it takes significantly longer.

Ds 2 was potty trained well over 3 years old but we learned later that he has dyspraxia and that's why we didn't manage to potty train him earlier,
