Car Seat Tantrums

My 12 week DS has suddenly decided he hates getting in his car seat - screams and screams until the car is proerly moving - he never used to do this. any ideas as to what it might be or how to calm him gratefully recieved

My dd2 hates being put into her car seat too and is 6 mths old. I just don't think they like being squashed into little seats with tight straps. Mine cries a lot but tends to settle after a couple of mins if I shush her and croon a bit.
You could try rocking it, or just not putting him in it until you are actually leaving. He'll prob get used to it too. dd2 isn't as bad as she used to be.

My ds2 isn't keen on his car seat either, although he has got better as he's got older (now almost 6 months). I don't lift the car seat out of the car very often, mainly because it's too awkward, and in part because he hates it. That does minimise the length of time he's in it. Friends are still using theirs to lug baby about in, but I'm not that strong!

Have also noticed that there's something about the harness - maybe I press on his stomach as I do it up - which makes him produce a mouthful of vomit every time I strap him in!

I'm looking forward to the next size up, but he's not 15lbs yet...

my 15 week old ds has just developed this problem too, he loved the car seat before. I have had to move the straps up to the top hole and take out the newborn backsupport which is supposed to be in until 4-5 months. He's only 12lb and this this is supposed to last until he is 1 year to 15 months according to the guff that came with it.

pt - they need to be 20lbs (9kg) for the next stage car seat, not 15.

Have you tried getting a toy/picture which attaches to the back of the actual car seat so that they have something to play with/look at?

No, I know. I probably should have put not even 15lbs. 20lbs seems a very very long way off!

Could you try one of those stage 0-1 carseats, like the Britax First Class....they are more roomy and allow for the lil one to stay longer rearfacing, which is a good thing
Especially my youngest son, who was a very unsettled Baby anyway, was much happier in the bigger carseat.

I was told with dd1 that as long as they can sit up unaided they can go into a forward facing seat.
With dd2 I hand a couple of toys from the handle and that usually keeps her pretty busy until the car is going. At 12 weeks he's poss a bit young, but he might like something to look at.

thing is, teh longer they can sit rearfacing , in a suitable carseat of course, the better...so, of course, if they ahve outgrown their rearfacing carseat, can sit unaidedly and a rearfacing is not available for your car, tehn yes, teh forwardfacing fitting one is probably better...but....at teh end of the day, a childs spine is "delicate" !

I agree. I had a friend visit me once with a 5 mth old in a forward facing, with the straps really loose and twisted.
I hate myself to this day for not saying anything.
But I did tighten the straps when I kissed him goodbye!!
I did mention it the next time I saw her. Kind of engineered the conversation that way.
Don't think it made any dif though.

Also depends on your car.
Went to Halfords where they'll fit them and if they're not right will suggest one that will. Tried one that went either way rear facing, but cos of way my seat belt was, when any pressure was put on it, the belt sort of reeled the seat in. So dd would've been squashed against the seat. Don't know if I explained that clearly.
Opted for forward facing.
