2 years old and not walking yet?

Hi 👋🏻 I'm new here so bare with me, I was just wondering as I hate talking to people in real life about this as people get judgy but my son turned 2 in September and still isn't walking. There's nothing wrong with him cos he can climb and crawl and his way off getting around is shuffling on his bum, he can and has put weight on his feet before even stood alone but he just won't walk, he's done steps with me but that's all. Please tell me someone has been here before or is and I'm not the only one? He's so clever and his speech is brilliant it's just the walking. I don't feel like he's ever gonna walk!

Speak to your GP. Protocol is that muscoloskeletal disorders should begin to be looked at if no walking by 18 months (found this out when mine was 3 :()

Not sure if this helps but I'm now 47 perfectly fit and well but didn't walk until 2.5 years . My parents did lots of tests and it was deducted I was just lazy , still am a bit:)

Have you seen your GP or HV? he needs assessing for any underlying medical issues to be ruled out. Chances are he's fine and will do it in his own time but it's definitely vital you get him checked out.

Very anecdotal but MiL says that DH didn't walk until 2. Completely fine now.

I'd also go to the GP/HV. My cousin wasn't walking at 2 and she had physio to help.

Talk to the GP, but both of mine were bum shufflers and the paediatrician (that we were seeing for something else) told me the average age for bum shufflers to walk was 24 months.

Hello, my LO was a bum shuffler, didn't pull up till 18 months. Never crawled. when she turned 2 she was walking assisted. And then at about 25-26 months she was walking independently. Please don't worry unless you feel there is more of a medical issue here.

There is hypermobility, so do look into that.

I should of probably mentioned that I had to get some supportive boots for my DD as she just would not support her weight without them. That's initially what got her to pull up and take her weight.

It feels like a life time but don't worry he will get there I promise :)

I have hypermobility EDS3 however I walked at 18 months so it doesn't always point to hypermobility. But again antidotal evidence.

DS walked about a month before he was two.

I got in touch with the HV who referred him to paediatrics.

His gross motor skills are fine but but he is still behind with his other milestones.

Always best to get it checked

It may well be nothing but it is time to bring him for a check up. Just go and see what the GP says. Is he developing normally in every other way? Is he speaking and communicating as a 2 year old should?

I had a bum shuffler too but he still walked at 14 months.
You'll only get anecdotal answers on here op so you're best to take him to the GP and have him checked out. It doesn't sound like he has any serious problem as he bears weight etc. but it could be something that's very quickly fixed with physio.

I know this thread is old but if the OP still uses this site, how did you little boy get on in the end? My son turned 2 on Saturday and still isn't walking. He's also a bum shuffler, he started doing that at 15 months. And only in the last 2 months he's started to crawl, pull up, cruise and climb the stairs and now he's done a few steps walking holding just one of my hands instead of two. He's always been able to weight bare. He is seeing a GP and has had blood tests done which have came back fine. We are waiting on a physiotherapist who's coming to see us at the end of this month but I just feel like we are getting know where and he's never going to walk. 😩

I could have written this post myself. My son is 2 years 1 month and also not walking so just wanted to reach out and say I know exactly how you feel. We were referred to a paediatrician who referred us to a neurologist, developing well in all other areas. I'm sure your little boy will be fine but definitely get him checked, it was only the neurologist that picked up that my sons joints are very stiff, but this was obvious as he walks on tiptoes assisted. we are currently awaiting results of an MRI scan he had on his brain and spinal cord. It's been a week of waiting so far and I am beside myself with worry. I came here to see if anyone else had been through the same as I can't bear the waiting anymore. Amazingly, my son has actually taken a few independent steps a few weeks ago but nothing since, we are starting physio in a couple of weeks time so hoping this will get him going and fingers crossed there is nothing awful on the scan. Sending best wishes to you all, be patient and I'm sure he will get there, you are not alone ❤️

Thank you for your reply, my son has actually started walking now, independently for nearly 2 months. It's just came out of know where. I wish I'd of known everything was going to be okay and I wouldn't have worried so much. I do find the the doctors around my area put fear In to you that something may be wrong, but at the same time you can't just rule things out. In our case our son was just being super lazy and wanted to do it when he was ready, not when he was supposed to. I hope your little ones results come back okay and there is nothing serious behind it. Sending you lots of hugs as I know this time can be really worrying. Xx

My Daughter is 21 months and still not walking, she’s a bottom shuffler. She has only just started pulling herself up but still unable to cruise along furniture. She can’t speak either but does baby sign. She has been having regular physio for a year as she has hypermobility and hypotonia.
She has been seeing a paediatrician since she was about 10 months and is now seeing a neurologist who wants her to have a brain scan when she’s about 2 and we’re now waiting to see a geneticist for further genetic testing (first lot of genetic tests where fine) he highly thinks there is a genetic abnormality 😢 it’s a real long waiting game so I know exactly what you’re going through. I hope you soon get the results and get some answers.

@Kelso0 sounds like you are at the same stage as us. My son also only started pulling himself up around the age of 13/14 months.

Hoping you get there soon. The thought of the scan is a scary thing but at least they can pinpoint if there is an issue and deal with it correctly. Not knowing is awful 🙏

It’s so reassuring to see other mothers in the same situation, my little girls 23 months...has been late hitting her milestones since she was little, sat up at 9 months, crawled at 16 months and is only now starting to stand up but not cruise.
It’s super worrying and it may sound selfish but super hard work carrying her around everywhere! I also have a 4 month old daughter so it’s a struggle. We are under physio but the therapist doesn’t seem to be concerned but I am!
She’s shown some red flags of autism since she was young and I’m worried it’s got something to do with that or maybe a development delay.
I’m so glad everything worked out for you Hannah and gives me that little bit of hope that I so desperately need!

Hello, I am sorry if I don’t write correctly but I am from Europe. My daughter is 25 months old and still not walking. She turned on her tummy at 7 months, sat at 11 months, pull herself to stand at 13 months and started crawling at 14 months. She cruises on furniture and walks when I hold both her hands. I am really worried. A doctor sad she has hypermobile joints but is it possible to be the reason. She also not talking but understand everything. Any advice.

Hi all, I hope you can guide me and share with me your experiences.

My son is almost 2 years old this October 2021, he still now walking. He doesnt crawl, he doesnt climb at all. He can sit alone, he can stand with support in walker but just for seconds.

We already went to pedia, every thing is okay, We wend already to Nuerologist as reffered, there is nothing wrong, they checked the bones, the kness and it was all okay. We tried doing CTSCAN already. Thanks God, all are fine....

They suggested us to do therapy and we are doing so.

Any parents here having same situation like mine? Please let me know.

My daughter is 16 months and a bum shuffler. After every parent came up to me in the playgroup freaking out that she wasn’t walking yet, I took her to be assessed. She has hyper mobility in her joints. We will be getting high top orthotic boots to support her ankle joints, I also have to do regular physio therapy and at home exercises to get her on track. That said, myself and heaps of other older family members also did not crawl and walked late- but didn’t get intervention because it was the 80s and have turned out fine.

Just finding this thread after doing a search - has anyone had an update? My son just turned 20 months yesterday and is still not walking. He's been diagnosed with hyper mobility, and has been attending physio, though I don't see loads of improvement with it. My daughter was a bum shuffler and eventually walked at 19 months - but this is very different in that he perfers to walk on his knees. He is very quick, but I think being in that position also makes his hamstrings quite tight, so it hurts to stand with his feet flat on the floor.
