12 Year old fined by school

Hi Everyone,
Has anyone heard of a school fining a child £5 for "Littering" in a dinner hall?
Seems a bit odd, and the school added the £5 fine to his "scopay" account (Scopay for those who don't know is an account that works off a fingerprint to pay for meals, etc. ) so it looks like they could take his dinner money to pay the fine instead of getting the kids to clean up after themselves.

Good grief! Seems a bit heavy handed to me. It would be more effective to make a child who litters, do some clearing up surely? Rather than hitting their parents in the wallet...that won't really affect him will it?

I would make an appointment with the head teacher and complain.

If this happened at my dc school I wouldn't be pleased. How is that teaching the child concerned anything about the consequences of his or her actions. Never heard of this. However, I wonder if parents were aware of this policy prior to sending their children to that school. In any event I question it's effectiveness.

If he did litter, he should be a punished. I agree cleaning up the mess himself makes more sense, and teaches a lesson.

I cleaned in a school, and some of the kids clearly don't give a shit who has to clean their mess. Flinging yoghurt at each other, so it ends up on walls, stuffing half eaten sandwiches down backs of computers etc.

I don't like the thought of some of the more entitled little darlings being fined, and not giving a crap because mum and dad will pay it and that's it. Hardly a motivator to not do it again.

It's not the school's job to teach your child to not litter, it's your job. Sorry op, have a chat with your ds and get him to pay with his own money. He could get fined for littering on the street. Ask him what happened, and get him to pay. I would be so embarrassed if that would happen to one of my kids I would never call the head teacher about something like that.

It is your job.

Financial fines are lazy and not productive.

5 lunchtimes picking up litter would be more appropriate,
