DS1, who is 2 years old, is Thomas obsessed.

My mother buys him lots of TTTE stuff, which is great, but it's got to the point where he won't play with/watch/read anything that's to do with Thomas. It's taken over his (and our) life!!!

Not sure anyone can suggest anything, but I juts wanted to say

I FUCKING HATE TRAINS!

Oh bless him! Did you get them in Next by any chance??

FrayedKnot · 07/02/2007 22:27

DS has learned the geography of our small town based not only on our local toy shops but our local model shops which sell proper trains "like Grandpa has in his garage" (what hope did I have when my dad has a Hornby train set & DS' cousin is 5 and still TTTE mad?).

Flying Scotsman, Silver Link, Mallard...

but when we go to the library I can spend hours browsing the adult books while he sits entranced by the "Seven Ages of Steam" from the transoirt section, or some such.

To say I never use it to my advantage would be a bit of a fib

Nemo2007 · 07/02/2007 22:30

DS was like this and now he has moved onto superheros..he is 3.3yrs.

TheArmadillo · 07/02/2007 22:44

IGW are you near Bristol? Cos down near me there's three full sized models of Thomas, Henry and Percy.

God knows why - they're concrete models (afaik) and behind a fence and you just stand on the pavement and look at them.

Luckily ds has many obsessions and none override the others (though the running commentary on every single light we see is doing my head in - lamps, street lights, traffic lights, torchs, lights on machines, lights on programmes - arrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhh!!!!!!)

Anchovy · 07/02/2007 22:54

The videos are my particular low point. The animation is so unbelievably shoddy. The absolutely worst one is a singing one called "Winter Wonderland" which is beyond dreadful (and yet strangely catchy).

Ds is 5 and deeply into Thunderbirds and Blue Planet, which is a real treat.

nearlythree · 07/02/2007 23:14

Both our dds (nearly five and nearly three) are into Thomas - dd1 still wants to meet the 'real Lady' - and they are also into real steam engines, traction engines etc. They watch nostalgia dvds and dd1 has a picture of the Mallard on her wall - and she knows who Sir Nigel Gressley is. We took them to a country fair and watched in bemusement as they both visited the vintage tractor display - neither dh or myself have the slightest interest.

controlfreaky2 · 07/02/2007 23:37

hunker your posts made me rofl....
deep breath ladies.... it's all a phase. these things shall pass... before you can blink it'll be bloomin nintendo games and football shoot out cards....ds 1 was ttte obsessed for a long while until one particularly grim video traumatised him for life (thomas caught in an avalanche made him hysterical with terror).....

hunkermunker · 08/02/2007 11:46

PC, no, got them in Sainsbury's

Anchovy, is that the one where they drone on tunelessly about Christmas?

dejags · 08/02/2007 11:53

You could be me IGW.

We are now at the point that every mouthful has to be a different train.

We have trains, tracks, aquadraw sets, quarries, more tracks, push alongs, bags,

He is obssessed.

I too HATE FUCKING TRAINS

edam · 08/02/2007 11:58

Get hold of some Ivor the Engine videos/dvds. Much more fun. Cheers me up if ds gets up too early! Classic kids TV from Oliver Postgate of Clangers fame.

Ruddy Thomas is so over-merchanised and capitalist since Wilf Awdrey's son sold out. Lost all its charm.

edam · 08/02/2007 12:00

Ooh nearlythree, hadn't seen your post. I've fired Mallard! My father is one of the group that owns Sir Nigel Gresley - can find out when they are running steam specials if you like?

IntergalacticWalrus · 08/02/2007 12:01

The Thomas DVD has been on all morning.

Poor DS1 is chucking his guts up and it's the only think so far thats stopped him crying. I don;t mind today though.

It's interesting you mention respite from Underground Ernie, as this is one other thing he will watch. He has to take my diary out of my bag on a regular basis to look at the tube map so he can "Look for Ernie"

Armadillo, I'm in Bath. Where are the concrete Thomas models? DS1 needs to know

TheArmadillo · 08/02/2007 12:07

Albert Crescent - near the Bristol Dogs home. Just off the BAth Rd.

I have no idea why they're there. Its kinda bizarre.

AllieBongo · 08/02/2007 12:09

it could be worse, my lovely little girl who i planned to do all girly things with after having a boy is obsessed with thomas too

IntergalacticWalrus · 08/02/2007 12:11

I'll have to lok out for it!!!

DS1 has just infoermed me "love Nepney" (Stepney)

He impresses me no end with his knowledge of all the obscure ones like Boco and Bulstrode.

Such a geek, and he's only 2.2.

He'll be asking me to make him a flask of weak orange squash while he scuttles off with a note book and some egg sandwiches.

IntergalacticWalrus · 08/02/2007 12:12

Next, I should have added to the last sentence.

DS2 is on mt lap

OP posts:
dejags · 08/02/2007 12:14

I also second Underground Ernie - we introduced it in a desparate attempt to get away from Thomas a few weeks ago.

DS2 loves it.

dejags · 08/02/2007 12:15

It's amazing how they get to grips with the numbers, colours, specification.

I couldn't believe it when DS2 (2 on the dot could name the trains by name and colour).

nearlythree · 08/02/2007 12:33

Edam - yes please, how exciting!

Ivor the Engine was so my favourite, I'd forgotten all about that - possibly explains a lot!

speedymama · 08/02/2007 13:26

My nearly 3yo DTS are obsessed with Thomas & Co. They even wake up screeching, "Watch Thomas, Watch Thomas". I know the words to the Thomas &Friends as well as Everyday a different day on Sodor songs. How bad is that? However, to make matters worse, I have to buy two of everything otherwise the screams and squabbles would tip me over the edge. GRRRRR!

dejags · 08/02/2007 13:30

They're two
They're four
They're six
They're eight
Shunting trucks and pulling freight
Red and Green and Brown and Blue
They're the really useful crew
All with different roles to play
Round Tidmouth Sheds and Far Away
Down the hills and round the bends
Thomas and his Friends

Arrgghhhhhh...

foxtrot · 08/02/2007 13:31

umm..isn't it 'hauling' freight?

dejags · 08/02/2007 13:32

You are correct - it's hauling. My DS can't get to grips with it, so he says pulling

Flossam · 08/02/2007 13:33

I knew this was you before opening the thread!

foxtrot · 08/02/2007 13:34

If there was such a thing, i could get a first class degree in the works of Revd Awdry ;)
