Do girls still show off their scars? What age? (Do boys do this?)

I remember doing this, and have seen lots of references to it in popular culture. Having read Madeleine to DS1 this morning, he keeps asking 'Why do girls show off their scars?'

I'm failing to come up with a good answer on this one.

Sorry- completely baffled by this question, NQC! What scars?

NotQuiteCockney · 06/02/2007 19:06

Sorry, I remember girls showing off their scars when I was little. You know, ones from stitches, or falling over, or appendicitis, or whatever.

Actually, I remember a good friend at uni being jealous of me because I scar well. Go figure.

dd will rule. She has a zipper scar down her chest from open heart surgery. She is only 3.4. Do girls really go through this stage?

NotQuiteCockney · 06/02/2007 19:16

Ack, does nobody else remember this?

Funny thing is, I remember it from childhood in Canada. There's mention of it in Heavenly Creatures, which is set somewhere Antipodean. And it's in Madeleine (the original, in French). Do English kids just not do this?

I love scars. So much more interesting than boring old birthmarks, moles and 'beauty' spots. I have a lovely one on my shoulder from pulling a teapot over me when about 2yo (living in Libya at time of revolution so great story of hospital journey post-curfew), my knees, my hands, my c-section and so on. I have a large freckle on my leg which I HATE!

DD has scars from her surgery. I hope cos I have a +ve attitude towards scars, she will too. But she's in no hurry to show them off these days now the thrill of surgery has apssed although doesn't hide them iyswim.

Scars are great - they mostly have a good story or interesting memory behind them.

I hope that too SueW. I have two large stomach scars (vertical ones) and have always worn bikinis. Dd has zipper scars and lots of scars on her legs. I hope she doesn't feel the need to hide them. Her chest scar is beautifully finished.

we did that, boys and girls! (i'm accident prone so i always won )

NQC-I grew up in Canada and don't remember showing off my scars?!

But then again I have no fab ones anyway.

NotQuiteCockney · 06/02/2007 19:54

Neither of my boys has much in the way of scars yet.

No explanations for why girls show off scars? I remember they were interesting when I was a kid.
