Helping DS make friends

DS is just starting Year 1 and is having trouble making friends. His best friend from last year has moved away and I think, that while he gets on ok with most of the children, he misses having a close friend. He's an only child and very imaginative and prefers imaginary play to playing sports. The other issue is that both DH and I work full-time so it's impossible to arrange play dates () in the week.
Any suggestions as to how to help him develop friendships?

In year one friendships are still very much developing OP. Not many DC have best friends at this age. What I suggest is finding out if school has any clubs after hours and signing him up for those and getting his name down for Beavers or cubs or whatever is local.x As many opportunities as possible to mix will help him.

Thanks I'll look into that. I know I'm projecting a bit since I was a lonely kid.
